Jus Gentium (law of all nations) referred to the universal principles all people have, which are fundamental to all human beings. Jus Civile (civil law) would encompass all of the specific norms within a region. This is like our modern government in the sense that the laws apply to everyone and not just a specific group of people. Rome also had the corvee system which was popular within the empire. The system required subjects, usually peasants, to provide labor as a payment of tax. Rome’s form of government was a republic which influenced other form of government in our modern world. Rome’s republic allowed adult citizens to have control, primarily land-owning males. In Greece democracy was created and it was one of the most enduring contributions to the modern world. It gave power to the people and was comprised of three separate institution like today.
