Inequality is a huge issue in society as minorities and the poor struggle to access sponsors. A case of a rich white individual interviewed by Brandt is Raymond Branch whose, “early literacy learning we are able to see behind the scenes of his majority-race membership, male gender, and high-end socioeconomic family profile”p.171 helped him access sponsors easily. Dora on the other hand (a Mexican-American) took it upon herself to learn Spanish by reading books and getting help online. Therefore Deborah’s comparison depicts to the reader different “privileges” each Dora and Raymond had. How different family backgrounds influence the access of sponsors and performance each person has for literacy and many…
Also, she claims that racism stems from the fact that Hispanics are “considered a nonwhite race”. Asian immigrants are a nonwhite race, but their educational achievements disproves that racism creates an indestructible barrier to success. Being that both Asians and Hispanics are part of the nonwhite group, they should face the same amount of racism, and thus share a similar degree of adversity. The 2000 census shows that 44% of Asians over the age of 25 held a four-year college degree, 26% of Whites over the age of held a four-year college degree, and 10% of Hispanics over the age of 25 hold four-year college degree, thus proving that being a nonwhite does not ultimately limit educational opportunities.…
Historical events and powerful motivation leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and our last President Barrack Obama have catastrophically shifted the future for African Americans education systems, salaries and occupations. African Americans have been in constant struggle with Socio-Economic Status and have often measured as a combination of education, income, and occupation. It has commonly conceptualized as…
There are gaps between incomes when comparing all racial groups. The group that I chose to study is African Americans. According to our text book, there is a significant gap between the incomes of the Black and White households (Schaefer). In 2009, the median income of Black households was $32,584. This is much lower than that of the White households holding at $54,461. Household incomes for African Americans have been gradually rising and can be seen in the median household income for the year 2013, $41,142, according to the tables provided in MySocLab Social Explorer Map: Income Inequality by Race (). There is also a low possibility of African Americans owning a home because of the lower income, but also due to discriminatory lending practices (Schaefer). Employment is another area that is held lower for African Americans. The unemployment rates have been high since the 1940s. The unemployment rate for Black males aged 16-24was 35 % during the height of the recession; this is very high because the national unemployment rate was this high during the Great depression. The social standings for this group, African American, is also much lower than Whites. There is a 39.2% rate for Black families with two parents and a 49.7% rate for those families that are only maintained by the mother (Schaefer, Figure 8.4). From a political standing, even though Barak Obama has entered and been in the White House, African Americans still have not received an equal share…
* Write a 150- to 300-word summary of the economic, social, and political standings of that group. Use additional resources if necessary, from the University Library or your textbooks. Provide citations for all the sources you use. Based on a 2000 Census, Income for whites are between $25,000-$30,000. Income for Hispanics is less than $15,000. Income for blacks is $20,000-$25,000. According to Thomas Segrone, a black family earning $50,000 in income is less likely to receive an inheritance, own their own home, and more likely to have more debt than a white family making the same income. Middle income black families are more likely to have lived in poverty in the past than white families of the middle class. Blacks have been more likely to live in poverty, crime and receive lower health care. African Americans were known to be social with their creations and inventions way before it was known. Their skills and inventions were passed on. They played roles with politics as well. After the civil war, blacks considered themselves republicans. It was the republicans along with Abraham Lincoln that started the abolitionists.…
African Americans also experience inequality and discrimination throughout the work place and government assistance. A white person with a criminal record is to be expected to get a job, than an African American applying for the same job, but without a criminal record. Since it is harder for African Americans to find jobs, their wealth is 20 times less than whites. Before laws involving race were put into place, whites were receiving welfare before blacks could even apply for welfare. Whites even have a higher life expectancy than African Americans. A white man will on average live to be 76 years old, whereas a black man will live to roughly 71 years old. A white woman has a typical life expectancy of 81 years old, while an African American woman’s life expectancy is 78 years…
Other Caucasians being thoroughly educated, earn their financial freedom. They stand firm in their belief that education is important, therefore a necessity. They encourage education in their own children. In comparison to African Americans and Hispanics, income, wealth, status and education rank high among Caucasians. Income among the races happens to be healthier amongst Caucasians than it is Hispanics or African Americans.…
One such challenge is the pervasive income inequality among minority groups such as the African-Americans. For a long time, the United States has established itself as the country where even the wildest dreams can be achieved with the right combination of hard work and motivation. For this reason, an outsider would expect to find a glittering economy where income inequalities and cases of poverty are unheard of. However, the reality on the ground is grim and unconvincing. Amy contends that the poverty rates in the United States have hovered around 11-13% for the last forty years and over 43 million Americans languish and endure in severe economic hardships. From the conservative’s perspective, government interference would only increase public spending while trying to rescue such individuals from economic hardships and increase the tax burden on other…
Beginning in the 1970s, wage rates began to decline and unemployment rates began to rapidly rise. This economic crisis that arose broadened the economic oppression that effected the African American population (Taylor, 2016, p. 53). These conditions remain unremitting in the current economic state of the United States. Undoubtedly, African Americans and other nonwhite minority groups, such as Hispanics, suffer the most from these circumstances, while whites are consistently more prosperous. Many people in the United States believe that persistent racial inequalities, in such cases as wages, income, residence, and healthcare, can be attributed to African American culture and individual failures, not racism (Brown, 1971, p. 6). However, this cannot explain the continuance of inequality once African American individuals acquire the education, skills, and experience necessary to prosper in the labor market. Whites still have an advantage over blacks and the attitudes of many white Americans remain unchanged because of the negative stereotypes that have accumulated. Moreover, the problem with the apparent advantage that whites…
The article Contributing to America‘s Cradle to Prison Pipeline Crisis, Community Organization the Elderly Poor in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District and Multicultural Community Practice Strategies and Intergroup Empowerment. The articles present examples as to how society has given special freedom and immunity to whites but blacks are not given the same exemptions. Blacks are perceived to be the cause of society ills as they are lazy and are on welfare, taking and selling drugs, contribute to the high crime rates, uneducated, uncivilized and violet. The fact are that there are more whites on welfare than blacks on the welfare rolls as whites make up 46.2 percent on welfare while blacks make up 33 percent. More whites are using and selling drugs, and there are just as much uneducated whites as to blacks; however society makes excuses for whites and allow acceptance more so than for blacks. Blacks are more likely to be criminalized as they are given little to no immunity within the judicial system. Once a black person receives a felon record they are even more discriminated against as they lose the right to vote, to obtain public housing and it becomes more difficult to obtain…
Over the past five years in America the annual earnings of African Americans has shown a difference in comparison with other ethnic groups. The gap in the wages in America proves to be a need for employment opportunities, economic disparities, and stagnant income.Employment opportunities in most African American communities are scarce which contributes largely to the wage gap. The annual household income for African americans exhibits the economic imbalances as other races have higher earnings. There are many reasons contributing to this ongoing wage gap, the stagnant income plays a major role as to why there’s been any significant change.…
Differences in race lead to divergent levels of economic development within the United States. Analysts often try to explain this phenomenon by observing a specific ethnic group's tradition and cultural ideology. Economists expand their analysis on the economic behaviors of African Americans by taking into consideration personal histories and value systems of the group under study. American families measure economic status in terms of income, and factors associated with material security as a whole. These factors may consist of health care, college funds, and retirement plans. However, African American families lag well behind when conceptualizing economic development under these terms.…
However, to further explain this in a statistical form, we say thus, African American worker’s earnings equal to 73% of white worker’s earnings, on average, and the average monthly social security retirement benefit for African American equals to 85% of the average benefits for white retirees. In addition, there are other features of social security benefit formula that protect the African Americans. For example, the social security benefit formula is focused on the maximum 35yrs of earnings and it castoffs or discards other years. This, however, helps the African Americans a great lot, since they have doubled the unemployment rates as well as experience longer average spells of employments compared to the white individuals. At the other hand, African American men tend to consequently have a higher number of years with no earning compared to the whites, on average.…
Still to date, the problem of income inequality is an issue of a great importance for million of African-Americans and others who struggle to improve their quality of life. It must be known by now, that economic injustice has had a devastating impact on black communities all across America. Issues such as inequality and racial discrimination in education, the social environment, and economics have gone on for too long, and it has been engraved in the American society as a way of life, a norm, and permanently engraved in our mind, which implies that hope for a better change in the way of our lives ,was and still is given up. Income inequality has many implications on all of us: poverty,…
Whites are naturally born more privileged than any other race in America. They are also statistically more prominent not to face the same hardship as African Americans would face economically. There is a huge gap in between classes that directly relates to race. “The richest twenty percent of Americans hold eighty three percent of the total household wealth in the country.”(Mantsios 310). The unequal distribution of wealth takes a huge toll on the African American Population. This does so because minorities are predominantly underclass or working poor. A parent's income affects not just themselves but also the children they are trying to provide for.”Approximately one out of every five children in the United States under the age of six lives in poverty”(Mantsios 311). Children who live in poverty are less likely to succeed due to the lack of resources and stable household. Parents who are unable to supply their children with what a normal middle class citizen would call “easy” and “affordable” materials can not. These underclass children who are predominantly African American struggle to get their hands on paper and pencils that apply to their daily educational lives. The parents in higher income areas are likely able to provide each child with these items and more to better their education. Families who struggle should receive extra help from…
