In his painting, Paris Street: Rainy Day, Gustave Caillebotte showcases his view on late 18th century Paris. The figures nearest to the audience are blurred and seemingly out of focus whereas the pedestrians and carriage towards the center of the town square have sharp edges and are more distinctly defined. The images in the background of the painting remain nebulous and dim. The point of focus advances the viewers eyes to the buildings in the background. Caillebotte demonstrates a two-point perspective using parallel lines in his arrangement of roads and buildings. This two-point perspective sends the focus to the back and blurs out images on the foreground.…
Thomas Cole was a leader in landscape painting during the first half of the nineteenth century. Cole painted many landscapes, but the one that drew me in the most was the Genesee Scenery. My first impression of the painting was that it was beautiful, but as I looked closer I saw visual cues within the color, form, depth, and movement. The deconstruction of Genesee Scenery will explain how the physiology on the eye helped me to see the four visual cues.…
Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus was one of few who went to the extremes of killing his own family members just to keep his new booming Empire up and running. Constantine ruled from 306 A.D. until 337 A.D. During Constantine the Great’s thirty-one years of ruling, he influenced the Roman Empire that affected the Roman people in a virtuous way. He strengthened Christianity in Rome and was a martyr in making Christianity a respected religion, he created economic reforms that helped the common people, and crafted impressive structures throughout the Empire.…
Ridge and gully in afternoon light is a distorted and strangely set out view of the traditions of a ‘regular’ landscape. The viewing area we are given is dominated by blended sections of different viewing perspectives filled with strangely shaped trees of varying different shapes, colour’s and sizes. All objects in the painting,…
Having said that, Streeton’s body of work was both celebrated and scrutinized, as within every audience there will be some who are for the status quo and some against it. On the contrary, contemporary viewers of Streeton’s Fire’s On, would presumably understand the painting to be a traditional landscape, due to the multitude of contemporary landscape paintings that we see today, which embody non-naturalistic colour and composition and steer clear of illusory depth of field and realistic representation of subject matter. Streeton’s objective of communicating, in its fullest, the ruggedness and the heroism of the Australian landscape, although potentially seen as irrelevant to contemporary viewers, reminds them of the nature of the terrain on which they currently stand, before it was domesticated in accordance with the rise of civilization. So, despite that much of the Australian terrain is now cultivated, Streeton’s Fire’s On is one of many works that immortalises the “great, gold plains” and “hot, trying winds” that are characteristic of Australian…
The” Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” best represents the themes of Ovids’ story “The Story of Daedalus and Icarus” and Brueghel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Some similarities between the three works is the depiction of Icarus flying, the melted wings, Icarus drowning and the ignorance of the towns people.”Musee de Beaux Arts” does not include the incident where the wings melted. “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is more representative of the stories and painting themes because they all demonstrate what the consequences may be when one does not listen to direction.…

Throughout the ages, art has been one of many ways to communicate with our history. Every painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. tells us a story of that time period and if we look hard enough, we can even feel what the people of that time may have been feeling. In this essay, two pieces of art will be introduced and interpreted: The Milkmaid (circa 1657-1658) by Johannes Vermeer which is a Dutch Baroque oil painting that 's 45.5 x 41 cm located in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Woman Baking Bread (1854) by Jean-Francois Millet which is a French Realism oil painting that 's 55 x 46 cm located in Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo, Netherlands. The agenda of this comparison is to understand different styles between the Dutch Baroque and French Realism, and to show how Vermeer and Millet deal with the same every day domestic theme in a different way.…
“The distance from the real world is as great as in central Italian painting, but rather than moving us toward idealizing abstraction, the Venetian painting transports us to a sylvan utopia of heightened sensibilities.” (ibid)…
The Forum of Augustus was erected in 2 BCE, a full forty years after it was promised in 42 BCE. Augustus at the time known as Gaius Octavius at the time vowed to Mars during the battle of Philippi to erect a temple in his name. He did this most likely to bring him strength in this battle as after the battle he was able to avenge his adoptive father Julius Caesar by killing his assassins. Sometime after in 27 BCE he became Princeps of Rome changings his name to Augustus. He then made plans to build a forum and build the temple he vowed of Mars Ultor inside of it. He also stated through propaganda that by doing this he was fulfilling his adoptive will linking him to the deified Julius Caesar whom the people loved making him more popular…
When Henson’s photographs are viewed through the subjective frame, they are looking to induce an emotional response from the viewer, while through the cultural frame, they are depicting the themes and issues of adolescence, isolation, the urban landscape and more. When Caravaggio’s work is similarly viewed through these two frames, his paintings induce an emotional response from the viewer, and his work is culturally significant. His paintings are often depicting scenes from history, a recurring theme being religious scenes from the bible. There is a similar key tool used by both artists to reach their audience. This is their use of light.…
One of the overall points that Augustus makes certain he conveys in the Res Gestae is that above all of his accomplishments, he was cared for by the people of his empire. The first part of the document addresses his various accolades of which were awarded to him by the senate and other such organizations of power. When pointing out that the Res Gestae was the official recording and collection of Augustus’ life by the man himself, the extent of his want to be remembered in a positive light is revealed. Out of the entirety of the emperors’ many accomplishments he still felt the need to mention that “all the citizens, individually and on behalf of their towns, have unanimously and continuously offered prayers at all the pulvinaria for my health.” This statement stresses the favor presented to the emperor from the lowest ranking people of his society and nothing further. The inclusion of this report and others of a similar nature imply an air of uncertainty regarding the legacy he was to leave behind.…
Art is one aspect of the past that has carried on for decades. Art in any form may it be poetry, novels, and playwright, sculpting as well as painting, has been an outlet for generations and continues to be an outlet and a means for expression. This paper will discuss “ The Mona Lisa” one of Da Vinci’s most famous paintings, as well as another great painting, Antonio Veneziano’s “Virgin and Child”(c. 1380). Both paintings focus on the human form and exhibit many variations of styles from lines, shading, color and possible meanings behind the work.…
There are so many ways in which history has been documented over time all serving as a permanent record of a culture and its people for future generations to have access to and learn from. The study of the visual arts and architecture in a given time period showcase the basic ideas about a group of human beings giving insight into their beliefs and cultural message. These insights are presented with a specific point of view intended by its creator, influenced by its historical experiences. And so, it is the responsibility of the observer to examine pieces of art and architectural structures taking into account the context in which they were produced. By doing so, we can more accurately understand the ideas that are trying to be conveyed. Political,…
Titian’s work epitomizes the transition from 15th century style painting to a less “meticulous[ly] finished” approach; Titian essentially pioneered the “colorist” movement by using “…more closely interrelated colours” that emphasize expression and dramatize the iconography (Gould). Diana and Actaeon is part of Titian’s “poesie” and contributes to a set of history paintings that portray subjects in an imaginative way. Rather than simply copy an image or provide a story, Titian delivers a representation filled with expression, filled with allusion. Though small details and items are usually placed for symbolic reasons, Titian seems to include various details to foreshadow downfall (the stag head, the hunting scene, the various reflective surfaces,…
