Paragraph 1: colour and emotions:
By eliminating pain, suffering and sadness it also restricts us from experiencing love, happiness and a wide range of emotions and feelings that make us human. You have to experience another emotion such as sadness to know what happiness feels like, this restricts us from having human experiences. In the giver Lois Lowey utilises colour to represent diversity, knowledge and wisdom that comes with colour, but colour not just red and green but skin colours this can create racial discrimination. In the Giver their world is grey so no one stands out but when confronted with something different they all freak out and start to judge, the more colour there is, then the more diversity there would be. The dark red symbolises emotions, feelings and love towards Fiona. But also when Jonas saw blood for the first time the deep red colour could also symbolise danger, pain and suffering. Similarly in Pleasantville they think that change is bad or “unpleasant”, but change to colour can show that it’s human to be different, whether it’s positive or negative it’s an essential part of human experiences. When bill looked through the art book that David got him, bill felt an awaking he could finally see past his boring plain routine life, to different coloured life. But by being different comes anger, aggression, pain and danger of not being accepted “it’s raining nothing to be afraid of, look I’ll show you” they were scared of the rain this symbolises fear of the unknown or change.
