Imagine having a negative reputation of flirting with mean when you have a husband or being alienated for a skin color you cannot control. This was the situation faced by Curley’s wife and Crooks in the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Discrimination occurs in this novel because both Crooks and Curley’s wife are discriminated against for things such as race and gender. Even though both characters are discriminated against on the ranch the reasons they are discriminated against are different. Both characters are minorities, have bad reputations, and open up to people who are willing to listen and talk to them. Crooks and Curley’s wife are both minorities in the book in different ways. Crooks is treated as a minority because his skin color in black. On the other hand, Curley’s wife is a minority for being the only woman on the ranch. She is heavily disrespected for that. For this, people talk about her negatively behind her back. In the text it said, “She’s a jail bait all set on the trigger. That Curley got his work cut out for him. Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain’t no place for a girl, specially like her,”(51). This quote shows that people talk about her behind her back and she is not wanted on a ranch full of men. In different ways, both Crooks and Curley’s wife were treated as …show more content…
This is shown when both characters easily open up to and tell everything to Lennie. Lennie who is a mental character is a person who listens to anything told to him and does not make the decision to not communicate with people. In the text it said, “I tell ya I could have went with shows. Not jus’ one, neither. An’ a guy tol’ me he could put me in pitchers…,”(78). This quote is an example of Curley’s wife being open and talking with Lennie as he is willing to listen to her. Being open to people who are willing to listen is something Crooks and Curley’s wife have in

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the two main characters, George and Lennie, frequently run into Curley, a contentious and hostile man. Curley is one of the main sources of conflict in the book, as we see when George warns Lennie: “…You gonna have trouble with that Curley guy… He’s gonna take a sock at you the first chance he gets” (Steinbeck, 29). Curley is representative of aggression and oppression, which Steinbeck shows us in both Curley’s actions and words.…

In the novel of “Of Mice and Men” Steinbeck invented an extremely ambiguous character known as Curely’s Wife. Readers would ether like or dislike the personality of Curley’s Wife. Her dream was to be in the movies as she quotes “Nother time I met a guy an’ he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural” In the novel she was massively disliked by the other characters for her attracting the attention of other men when she was married. She does this by the way she dresses. This makes her sexually provocative and attractive to men.…

“Discrimination has a lot of layers that make it tough for minorities to get a leg up.” -Bill Gates. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men takes place during The Great Depression is 1937. In Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck uses some of his characters to show discrimination. The characters that i’m choosing to tell about the discrimination are Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Lennie. Steinbeck’s focuses are showing how discrimination was used during the early 1900’s from slavery, gender, or just people that are disliked.…

When Curley’s wife enters the room she victimises Lennie, Crooks and Candy straight away. “They left all the weak ones here”. She knows that she has more power on the ranch then these three men so she rapidly makes herself feel better by trying to show them that she’s not to be messed with. Curley’s wife is lonely “think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever once in a while”. However, she says this after just calling them “the weak ones”. This is not good for Curley’s wife, as if she always feels lonely and has no one to talk to, but who would want to talk to here if she’s just going to mock all of them.…

In current times and in the past people have divided for many different reasons. This prejudice can be the result of many things, some of which include race and gender. One of them, a worker by the named Crooks, is experiencing discrimination because he is an African American on a ranch filled with whites. Flawless skin, small waists, the unattainable idea of perfection. The idea that a woman should be the icon of feminine beauty, a brainless robot that’s great at housework and pleasing their husband. has lasted through generations upon generations, and even continued in the 1930s, when The Great Depression was reeking havoc on everyone’s lives. Instead of letting equally smart women work along side of men to bring the stocks up, they were still told to stay home and be the mothers and wives that they should. This idea continued into Steinbeck’s famous book, Of Mice and Men. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck subtly reiterates his belief that white men are superior to every other race and gender. In my opinion, the misogynistic portrayal of Curley’s…

In John Steinbeck’s classic novel Of Mice and Men we are left with a question, “Now what do you suppose is eatin’ them two?” At the time Carlson did not understand the pain that George was going through after shooting his best friend. Many people also aren’t aware that John Steinbeck wasn’t just trying to tell a story but he was also trying to focus on the many injustices that surrounded him. Monumental topics like racism, sexism ageism, and discrimination towards the mentally slow. Constantly we see he comes back to these themes. John not only wanted to tell us a great story but he wanted to make us aware of the injustices that are very present in our everyday lives. One of the many themes he constantly comes back to in his novel is sexism, he tells us about Curley’s wife and how she is constantly pegged as a flirt when all she wanted is a friend, he also pointed out that women are discriminated because she never had a name and was looked at like property, then finally at the end of the novel after she dies no one mourns for her. Throughout his novel John was trying to help us realize how we treat people in our society, and the price we have to pay for it in the end.…

Women like Curley’s wife were looked as possessions to be owned, who were void of feeling, and could not feel the effects of loneliness. African Americans like Crooks were discriminated against and left unincluded, on account of the color of their skin. “I could get you strung up on a tree so fast it ain’t even funny” (Steinbeck 81). Crooks is berated with threats from Curley’s wife and derogatory language from other workers on the ranch. “A lifelong victim of segregation of social ostracisms, Crooks lives in constant fear of inadvertently breaking society’s ridgid taboos” (Bloom). The rigidness of society in 1930’s drives Crooks to distance himself from others and, Curley’s wife to seek company with others. Steinbeck uses these thematic ideas to depict the difficulty of social life for some of those when lived in the 1930’s to the…

What does a person think when they are labeled? No matter bad or good, the reaction is always significant. There is a plethora of interesting characters in the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, but some of them stand out more than others. One of these outstanding characters is Curley’s Wife. Curley’s Wife may not seem to be a character of any importance, given the fact that she does not receive an actual name, however she controls a copious amount of the plot. Some argue that Curley’s Wife is a villain, and some argue that she is a victim. Although Curley’s Wife attracts attention to herself, she is a victim in the ranch due to the fact that she is in a loveless marriage, and her version of the American dream was crushed.…

Portraying him as a person afflicted by racial prejudice, Steinbeck details the effects of discrimination on Crooks, including his feelings of loneliness, shattered dreams, and resentful characters. While racism serves as a source of conflict in the story, Steinbeck extends Crooks’ experiences to racism’s prominent role during the Great Depression. In the 1930s, African-Americans suffered from economic inequality, poverty, and unemployment. However, more severe harm came from the racial discrimination and bigotry directed towards them in a mainly white society. John Steinbeck calls the plight of African-Americans to attention in Of Mice and Men. He argues that while all groups had financial losses, African-Americans lost much more. Living in an economically crippled and racist society, they lost their…

Not just Curley’s wife but all women during this time period in general were treated as second class citizens and objects. No one paid attention to them all men cared about was work and making money. They didn’t have time to pay any mind to them. Curley and the rest of the guys on the ranch treat Curley’s wife like she is invisible. George tells Lennie, “Don’t you ever look at that bitch. I don’t care what she says and what she does. I seen em poison before, but i never seen no piece of jailbait worse than her. You leave her be,” (Chapter 2). Lennie finds his wife very pretty and the last girl he encountered at Weed she accused him of raping her and they had to flee. George doesn't want Lennie screwing anything up for them to not work anymore. “Curley’s wife wanders around the ranch searching for human contact.
