Similarities Between 'Digging And Girl'

In today’s society, gender roles are a fairly controversial topic, especially when it comes to equality and contribution to society. There are many debates on how a man or woman should fit in society, and if there should even be specific roles for each gender. In “Digging” and “Girl” gender roles are personified not through the characters equality in society, but a struggle with identity. In “Digging” the narrator struggles with the fact he has not followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. He decided to take a different career path, and feels shameful about it. In “Girl” a young adolescent girl’s mother does not like her daughters actions, and therefore corrects her daughter. Both characters are influenced by what society says
