Similarities Between Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
First, by looking at the both book’s setting, they both explored evil by using a difference of the theme of evil. In the LOTF, it starts the story in the middle of war where atomic warfare happens. Piggy says, “Didn’t you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They’re all dead” this suggested that the war is happening at that time and by usage of atomic bomb, most of the people have been dead and they became separated from the outside world and this shows that the children have no parents or adults to look at him or to decide for them where children can decide everything they want. Golding used a setting in a island, because in an island, there are open area like huge lagoon like in chapter one, Golding described island as “open space by a few leaves” and this can be shown as a huge space. The isolated island described as two sided in the book, for example, in chapter one, the island mentioned as “The ground arc of coral lagoon was still as a mountain lake-blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple” which shows the island is very clean and beautiful because no one was not in this island and the children were first humans to go inside of this island. However, when the book goes on, Golding shows the negative side of the island. In chapter one, the island is described as “he climbed over a broken trunk and was out of the jungle”. This suggest island as a island have a huge amount of destroyed places, darked place where everyone can’t know what will happen next. In the quote, the word “broken” makes quote more danger because when there has a broken things, it can be dangerous to people and by jungle is dark, no one can not see broken trees easily so this word can support the idea that island can be dangerous. There is also a huge forest which Golding described as “the ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass, torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees” which shows there a huge amount of darker side of an island. By using both contrasting side, it shows the duality of a setting when it shows the duality of natural human’s mind which is evil and goodness.

In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a lively street is described: “Even on Sunday, when it veiled its more florid charms and lay competitively empty of passage, the street shone out in contrast to it’s dingy neighbourhood, like a fire in a forest” which suggest that the nicer part of London. However, Stevenson shows the contrasting side of London by mentioning in chapter one, “‘a certain sinister block of building thrust forward its gable on the street. It was two storeys high; showed no window, nothing but a door on the lower storey and a blind forehead of discoloured wall on the upper”, which shows the darker side of London and this might be reflect that this can be cause a serious events will happen. During Stevenson writes Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, London city was growing city during Victorian society, and a lot of people from all the country start to income to London. However, in both texts, they used the duality of human which is evil and goodness by using the idea of day and night, because in day, everything can be seen easily to everyone and because daytime is brighter than night, we can describe bright as a goodness of a human nature. On the other hand, night, it can be described as a evil side of a human nature because by night is full of darkness, so other can not know what will happen next. Ralph, the leader of the group, can be described as the strongest child in a group by the way he is described, in chapter one: “you could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil”. This quote suggest that he can be like a boxer, who have to be strong, agile yet also violent. This quote can also show how kind or safe he is. In quote, “eyes that proclaimed no devil” can be shown as that Ralph is not a evil for others and he is nice to others. However, Ralph shows a different side to him in Chapter One, when Piggy tells Ralph that his nickname at school was “Piggy” and asks him not to tell anyone. However, Ralph ignores Piggy and tell everyone that his nickname was “Piggy”. This may suggest that even though Ralph is generally a good character on the island, he is not as pure as Simon and has the potential to be influenced by Jack to become evil. The word “ugly without silliness” shows that his is not attractive like Ralph, but he is a serious character. . By his emotions, we can infer that he represent as a evil side in the LOTF . On the other hand in the LOTF, there has Simon who is the goodness. Simon in is very creative and quite. For example, in chapter one, Simon mentioned candle buds as “Like candles. Candle bushes. Candle buds.” Which suggest that he have creative minds comparing to others when Jack comments about candle buds like “Jack slashed at one with his knife.”, this shows that Jack ignores about the creativity and not interested about the things which shows that he doesn’t listen to others well and he thinks in negative mind. Ralph comments like “You couldn't light them” which shows that Jack and Ralph thinks about reality when Simon thinks creatively . Furthermore, Simon is a character who is perfectly pure to others. Not like Ralph who is mean to Piggy. In chapter 3, Golding mentions, “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands”. This suggest that even though he is in hunger in an isolated island, with lack of food to eat, he is thinking first about the children who can’t reach the fruit or to eat so he helps the children to eat well. This infers that he is very kind to to others and he is greedless about the food or products which is lack in the isolated island. By his action in an isolated island when Ralph hav huge of selfishness to eat foods and hunts the animals, Simon is only one who is naturally pure in this character and he can be represented as pure goodness in our human nature.
