When the police return to their apartment, Oliver´s father is already gone. Oliver´s mom, Maureen, flies to New York to get him. When he first returns home, everyone was told to give him space.
This is hard for Emmy considering they were best friends. Emmy starts to once again become best friends with Oliver. She teaches him how to surf and helps him with his homework because he had to redo junior year due to his science and math skills from homeschooling. This friendship soon turns into something more. Emmy and Oliver have a lot of chemistry. As they grow closer, he tells her things that nobody else knows about how he feels and about his dad. As their relationship continues, Emmy gets accepted into college at UCSD, which is two hours away. This news causes problems with her very overprotective parents and her best friend Caro. She was supposed to go to a community college and live at home. While Emmy is having all these problems Oliver is having trouble too. He received a package from University of Columbia. When he opens it he realizes that it is from his dad, who is wanted by the police. It asks him to meet at a local diner so they can talk. Emmy is automatically opposed, yet Oliver goes ahead and goes. On the day theyŕe supposed to meet Emmy can't find Oliver anywhere. She realizes that he is at the diner and leaves school to go to the
diner. When she shows up she is speechless to see Keith there in the booth with Oliver. When she walks in he is welcoming. They talk and then they hear sirens. Keith called the police on himself and turned himself in.
Critical Analysis: This book is a great read. As soon as one problem is solved, there is another one that comes up. This factor leaves you wanting more and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This story teaches you a lesson that everything can be fine one minute, then change and turn into chaos the next. It also shows that being persistent and not giving up and doing what is best for you is how you live your life to the fullest. When Emmy doesn’t tell her parents that she surfs or that she applies to UCSD, it shows that doing what is best for you is what should always happen.
