In Barcelona FC, for instance, Messi, Luiz Suarez, and Neymar are the offense Gods that they 'worship'. Much like religions, their football stadiums function as their places of gathering or places of worship.
From those similarities only, it can already be concluded that football can serve as a religion to some people. In my opinion, the bigger purpose of religions is to fill in the void in which people are scared of, for instance: the fear of death, humans' undoing, or to explain why we exist in this reality. With the presence of football, people who are anxious about those issues can be distracted and only enjoy the present. Given that, football--or any other form of entertainment--can replace the role of religions, although I realize that there are some aspects that only religions can ultimately give.
A religion needs a God, in my opinion, because it will then be easier for the followers to understand or believe in the teachings of that religion. Without the existence of a God--the ultimate reality, followers can easily be misled and then those people, possibly, will not assume the importance of the
