Similarities Between Jesus And Simon In Lord Of The Flies
In modern writings, there are characters that are parallel to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Son of God that represents joy and all that is good in the universe. Jesus encouraged good in the world and was opposed by evil. In the story the Lord of the Flies, cruelty is presented on an isolated island with a group of boys. A boy named Simon, who is a character in the novel The Lord of the Flies, stands out from all the others and shows similarities in his actions and qualities with Jesus Christ. Simon is the name of one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. This helps support the idea that the boy, Simon, on the island is a Christ-figure (Fabiola Marques, 2013) Simon, like Jesus, cares about other people and their emotions. Ralph symbolizes civilization and Ralph symbolizes savagery, so where does Simon stand? Simon stands in a different plane than all the other boys. He represents a spiritual human goodness. All the other characters in the novel have no moral behavior once they realize there is no order or civilization. Simon is the only boy that still acts morally. He is very nice to the littluns. He would help them get fruit they couldn’t …show more content…
The Lord of the Flies also tempts Simon. The Lord of the Flies refers to Beelzebub, another name for the devil (Title of the Lord of the Flies, 2007). The Lord of the Flies spoke to him, “‘you are a silly little boy… there isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast…you knew didn’t you? I’m part of you... don’t try to escape…we are going to have fun…’” (Golding 143-144). This tempted Simon. He tried to tell the boys the truth. Jesus spread his faith, which had conflicted with the Romans. Simon was as well trying to the spread the truth about the ‘Beastie’ and was still shut down by the boys. They made fun of Simon for his guess about them being the beast. Once he came back with information about the parachutist to the boys, the savagery took over them and killed
