On page 99 in Maus II, Artie, Francoise and Vladek picked up an African-American hitchhiker to drive him home. Once the hitchhiker gets out of the car Vladek says, “I had the whole time to watch out that Shvartser (other word for African-American) doesn’t steal us the groceries from the back seat!” (Spiegelman, Maus II, p.99). In “People for Sale” it’s already quite clear that how people are auctioning off poor Africans to families in Europe to be there slave is racist because events like this have occurred in the past where white people had complete control over blacks. These events from Maus and “People for Sale” are similar because they both show acts of racism that could have been influenced from something that happened in the past. For example on page 100 in Maus II, Vladek explains to Artie and Francoise that when he first moved to New York there were Shvartsers everywhere and if you put down a valuable item for a second it would be gone and “People for Sale” is similar in some ways to slavery in the mid 1800s. Events that occurred in the past should not affect the way people act today, because now African-Americans have a stereotype that they steal, which is not okay because people believe that this stereotype is
