where his photograph is crinkled in the shape of a cross, Jesus Christ is a definite aspect for theme. “Small wonder so many folks saw a blue-eyed Jesus in the role” (Pevere 1). It is a small wonder-isn’t it? How ironically the rebel of the film resembles Jesus Christ himself. “ Then too, after the station wagon bearing the dying Newman drives off into the rainy night, a dramatic point at which to have ended the film, there is a postlude establishing partly with flashbacks that Newman has Christ-like become a convict legend” (Champlin 4). Regardless of his…
"Devil and Daniel Webster," by Stephen Vincent Benet written many years after "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving both very alike in many ways, as they both tell a tale implementing social values and human choices. In both tales i believe you can find differences as well fue to culture during their time periods. Benet established his prespective on social, moral, and cultural values differently from Irvings, he used a whole new mindset. Benet's tale used a more efficient way during his period of time he included perspectives of the past and he added a modern hint to the work. See Benet clarifies the moral value through the need to be able for a mans crops to prosper saying that it was absolutely okay to be inadequate if it was…
Tadadaho is similar to European beliefs of Satan because he controls all the evil, rebelled against the other side and both have spirits watching us civilians on Earth. Tadadaho was a person of great powers. He could control the evil in the world and cause all bad things to happen. Tadadaho feeds off of violence and bloodshed, he loves wars. In many ways Tadadaho is similar to Satan. For one example, Tadadaho attacks the tribes without doing much work, he is battling with his powers. Tadadaho harmed the tribesmen when he fired arrows out of nowhere at them. He also put harm on their village by killing the leader`s one daughter and destroying the town. Satan is similar because he…
Roman religion and Christianity both express many similar foundational and structural ideas. Romans and Christians share the same base of strong moral as well as respect for authority. The Roman family’s shrines to the gods although not exactly the same is very similar to Jesus’s followers enamored by his teachings, and in turn was very cult-like. They were passionate about their gods, and needed to express that. Both religions believe in sacrifice. Roman’s would sacrifice themselves, food, and objects in order to please the gods, while Jesus sacrificed himself for humanities sins, others who followed in Jesus’s footsteps were considered Martyrs. Another similarity belongs in the hierarchy and social status, Rome was very structured with the patron-client system, which focused on respect. The hierarchy of Christianity was focused on doctrine and keeping internal strife at bay, as did Rome’s hierarchy.…
In The Devil and Tom Walker, Tom Walker meets a Black Man in the forest and the man tells of buried treasure, and Tom can have it for a price. Tom agrees to swindle people for the Devil, and agrees to give the Devil his soul. While he quickly gained many riches of this world, he began to worry about the next and regretted making the deal with the Devil. Finally he tells one of his customers, "The devil take me if I have made a farthing!", and so the devil took him. This short story is an American folk tale because it has unrealistic events, it expresses a general truth about life, and has stereotypical characters that embody a single human trait.…
Stories and myths of the devil and encounters with him are as old as time itself. They appear frequently in movies, essays, plays, television programs and books, and American authors Stephen King, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving are certainly no exception. However, they each demonstrate it differently in their short stories.…
Christianity began during the time of the Roman Empire, which was also the time at which the mysteries reached their height of popularity. The reason these cults were called “mystery religions” is because they involved secret ceremonies only performed by those who were initiated into the mystery religions. Those who belonged to the cults believed that the practices and rituals would bring salvation or immortality. Also, each mystery was centered around a myth in which the deity either returned to life after death or triumphed over his enemies. Because both Christianity and the Roman mystery religions originated in the same place and around the same time, they share many similarities…
Washington Irving and the flaws of marriage In “ The Devil and Tom Walker”, by Washington Irving marriage is ridiculed by Irving using satire. Satire is used in the story to attempt and ridicule marriage to cause awareness or change. Irving makes fun of marriage by including statements that show how bad Tom and his wife’s arguments get, how Tom will do anything to not please his wife and how he uses the loss of his wife for comfort. One of the first marriage flaws Irving used was that Tom showed signs of physical abuse.…
Zealot by Reza Aslan is a meticulously researched biography that challenges the belief of one of the most influential and enigmatic spiritual leaders, Jesus. Reza Aslan examines Jesus through the perception of his era: first-century Palestine, an age of unrest and rebellions. Aslan, at the start of the book, reviews the attempts of a number of men who sought to overthrow the established order and free Israel. His belief was that Jesus was an itinerant Jewish preacher who sought followers to establish what he would call the “Kingdom of God,” which was a revolutionary movement to overthrow the established regime, the Roman hegemony over Israel. The campaign Jesus started was so threatening that the Romans arrested and executed as a criminal. After his death, his followers would change his political teachings to that of spiritual teachings thus calling him God.…
The character Thomas Anderson, also known as “Neo” in the film was “The One”. Before Thomas Anderson met Morpheus he was living a double life; in one life he was a computer programmer and in the other life he was a hacker named Neo. The quotation "You seem to be living two lives, Mr. Anderson," led to consider the duality of Christ. Similarly, Neo lived as both a devotee of the system Thomas, an worker of a valued firm and as a hacker in conflict to the system. It is interesting that Christ was considered a criminal by numerous of people, and ultimately put to death as such. As Neo trailed his "hacker nature", his true powers as the savior started to become evident…
The Holy One, Word of God, Emmanuel, and Son of God, these names describe one man: Jesus Christ. No other person in the history of the world is more well known or respected. The man born of a virgin and raised by a carpenter. He taught kindness and compassion while driving out hate and corruption, and his own people, the Jews, and the Romans put him to death for preaching the good news. Jesus’ impact on the world is unparalleled. Wars were fought in his name. The church, his lasting gift, influenced life for almost two-thousand years in Europe. The modern world is truly shaped by this man. One may wonder who, if anyone, can match this man in any manner. While no mortal is even on the same level as Jesus, similarities can still be drawn.…
In the sacred text “In The Beginning: Genesis” Moses writes about Adam, Eve, God, and the serpent. The serpent tempts Adam and Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge that God told them not to eat from. In the epic poem “The Odyssey” Homer writes about Odysseus going to fight in the Trojan War and his twenty year journey to make it back home. When the characters got tempted, what they wanted looked good at the time, but when they pursued it, they turned out to have consequences.…
Islam shares more similarities with Christianity than one might think. Both religions believe in only one god with similar traits, the men Moses and Jesus as important figures, and have roots in Judaism. However, Islam also has many differences. The primary figure of Islam is the Prophet Muhammad who received God’s final message through the Archangel Gabriel. Muhammad’s teachings and way of life are included in the Qur’an, which is the Islamic holy book. With the support of his wife and his uncle, Chief Abu Talib, Muhammad avoided persecution from the people of Mecca. After they died, he was forced to leave to the city of Medina due to pressures of polytheistic Meccan merchants that were threatened by his teachings. This move is called the…

Augustus terminated the dying democracy he inherited and instituted a monarchy that lasted for over 500 years, whereas Caesar had attempted to create a monarchy but failed as he was assassinated in 44 B.C. This essay will examine three ways in which Augustus succeeded where Caesar did not. Primarily, Augustus eliminated all his enemies, which ensured he was not assassinated. In contrast to this, Caesar had chosen to show clemency to some supporters of Pompey, two of which, Brutus and Cassius were then leaders of a group of conspirators who assassinated him. Secondly, Caesar did not portray his rise to power as being in line with the values and laws of the Republic constitution, which left senators disaffected, which eventually led to him being…
