Symbolism is a big part of Night as well.
Elie is contained at the death camp for several months and barely ever has anything to eat. Because of this, food has never been so valuable to the victims of Auschwitz. Therefore every time people received bread from soldiers, they would act as if it was something they've never seen before. the death camp dehumanized the people completely, and the fact that bread was the most valuable thing they had reveals how horrible the conditions were. Bread was their only hope to survive, when it was something so unimportant in a normal human’s
life.
In the novel Perks Of Being A Wallflower, the main character Charlie struggles with himself. Charlie blames himself on the death of his aunt for his entire life, making him feel guilty and unimportant. He becomes attached to the thought of him causing the accident of his aunt, and eventually becomes extremely ill. Charlie has no hope left for himself and even tries to take his life. but just when things got bad, his friends were there to help him through it. They were able to help him see the light and become a better person. they saved him from his mentality and made him a better person.
Charlie in Perks Of Being A Wallflower goes through a lot with his new friends Sam and Patrick. Sam and Patrick saved him from his worries and guilt from life. This is symbolized when Charlie and his friends go through a tunnel and feel “infinite”. They play their favorite song and hang outside of the window with not a care in the world. Charlie feels as if everything that was going on in his life, was lifted off his shoulders. He has no worries or cares in life from this point on.
the quote by Martin Luther King Jr. means that only amongst negativity are the positive things in the world portrayed. The novels Night by Elie Wiesel and Perks Of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky supports this idea. Night and Perks Of Being A Wallflower support this quote through symbolism and conflict. Only when the darkest side of life are shown is when the positive sides of life are revealed.
