Of Mice and Men and The Great Gatsby are tragic books where the characters strive to achieve the American dream. Because of the common dreams of the characters, these two books’ characters can be compared to each other to teach morals about how to achieve the American Dream. The American Dream is a dream that everyone strives for, where the world is perfect in the eyes of the dreamer. The Dream that is nearly impossible to achieve, and describes the ideal world where everything goes correctly for the dreamer. Because the book Of Mice and Men was written during The Great Depression, the people of that time, like George and Lennie, both dream to have a stable job, and eventually be able to live off “the fat of the land.” On the other hand, Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby lived during The Roaring twenties, which was a time where the average population was more prosperous. Yet despite the major differences between their generations, the characters still have many common characteristics, like the similarities between Daisy and Curley’s wife.

An example of when the characters where reliant of each other is when Lennie and George work together to achieve their dream of finding some land to call their own, and be able to live of the “fat of the land”. Another example of this is when Nick and Gatsby work together. Gatsby and Nick work together when Nick helps Gatsby seduce Daisy, while Gatsby mentors Nick and invites him to attend many important parties. On the other hand, those who work alone like Curley’s wife never accomplish the goals that she set out for herself. These books teach us how the American dream is a nearly impossible dream to accomplish alone, yet working together helps make the process
