Similarities Between Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption
Everyone has different values and morals they live their lives by. Some values and morals may be similar, some may be different. A common value that many people have is hope. Hope provides a sense of relief and happiness in people that things will turn out the best for them. The value of hope is shown often by Stephen King in the novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption through Andy Dufresne. Stephen King also shows hope through many characters the film Dolores Claiborne. Through his conflicting scenarios, Stephen King was able to provide his readers with an idea of hope in the lives of the characters in his novels.

Stephen King foreshadows Andy Dufresne’s escape when he scratches his initials into his cell wall and chunks fall out. This is an example of hope because while Andy begins digging the hole in his cell wall it provides him hope that he will be able to escape and be the free man he wants to be. Another example of hope in Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is when Tommy Williams arrives at Shawshank and tells his story about Elwood Blatch. According to Williams, Blatch had said he murdered a man named Glenn Quentin and his lover. Elwood Blatch had claimed”There’s one guy doing time up-Maine for these two people I killed. It was the guy and the wife of the slob who’s doing the time.” This gave Andy hope that he could present Tommy Williams story to a judge and get out of Shawshank for good without the need of escaping. In the film Dolores Claiborne there are many examples of hope. Stephen King shows motive as a critical action of his characters reasoning for hope. An example is when Dolores begins working as a maid at Vera Donovan’s mansion to earn money so she can get her daughter Selena and herself away from her abusive husband Joe. Vera tells Dolores that “sometimes an accident is an unhappy woman’s best friend”. This quote had led Dolores to learn about the eclipse which gave her hope in an effective way to get rid of

I searched the Esko High School on-line Card Catalog for hope as a subject and only one book came up. The fiction book is called Hobart, and the interest level is for children grades three through six. I then searched a related word (faith) as a subject entry, and it showed fifty-five results. I think more results came up for faith then for hope because faith is more commonly associated with religion than hope is. I then looked up hope as a keyword and over two-hundred results popped up; there were mostly fiction books for children grades three to six. One book that I clicked on is called Seeds of Hope: The Gold Rush Diary of Susanna Fairchild; it's "a diary account of fourteen-year-old Susanna Fairchild's life in 1849." Her mother has just…

“Wit,” by Margaret Edson, and “Atonement,” by Ian McEwan, both consist of happy endings in a deep and meaningful way. The outcome of these novels may not be perfect endings ripped straight out of a Disney Movie; however, they are happy due to the characters being able to undergo “some kind of spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation, even with the self, even at death” (Weldon). In “Wit,” Vivian’s ability to reevaluate herself and morally accept the decisions she has made throughout her life, creates a positive outcome for the novel.…

Darabont and Kesey use messianic imagery to display conflicts between hope and oppression. Darabont portrays Andy as a humble Christ figure who “…had a quiet way about him,” and strolled like he had “an invisible coat that would shield him from this place [Shawshank prison]” suggesting the same modest traits of Jesus. Darabont uses this religious allusion to foreshadow that hope will prevail; Andy’s hope never fades, “…there is something inside that they can’t get to…Hope.” Darabont used a birds-eye-view shot to place the audience in a God-like position when Andy escaped; with his hands outstretched as if to say, ‘thank you God,’ emphasising his hope for success and being ‘reborn’, like Jesus, into freedom. In contrast to Darabont, Kesey uses messianic imagery to convey oppression prevailing. McMurphy states that he is “not a saint or a martyr.” Unlike Darabont’s portrayal of Andy as a sombre and modest Christ figure, Kesey portrays McMurphy as loud and confident but puts on a façade for the sake of others, asking “Do I get a crown of thorns?” when faced with electro-shock therapy and insisting “that it wasn’t hurting him,” telling the others that “all they was doin’ was chargin’ his battery for him.” Kesey portrays him as ‘self-sacrificial’,…

Have you ever been hopeful, even when it seemed your hope was hopeless? Hope is something all humans share whether it be for a better life or for a different path. All humans have something that resembles hope. It almost seems that humans love to tell others how hope has helped them survive troubling times. For centuries mankind has been drawn to literature about the underdog overcoming odds because we as a species enjoy seeing the little guys win. Three pieces of literature in particular come to mind when speaking of hope and how it fills mankind with a fight for survival. The books, Night by Eliezer Wiesel, The Glass Castle, By Jeannette Walls, and Red Rising, by Pierce Brown all feature main characters believing in themselves and…

In "Hope is the thing with feathers", hope is heard in troubled times and warms the soul, but isn't always rational. The poem says of hope, "That [it] perches in the soul" (2). Hope is described as constant, and as an irrefutable part of us. Hope is also, "sweetest-in the Gale" (5). People can have hope anytime, anywhere. Hope is welcome when all else has failed. However pleasing hope is, it, "sings the tune without the words" (3). Hope sounds nice, and promises much, but there are no words to back up the tune, and is mostly something to keep one going, not something that will ever amount to anything.…

This idea is demonstrated when hope is never defeated because of support from people with close bonds physically and mentally. In addition, hope can never be defeated since it’s source is from the identity of the person. Hope is a feeling that what is wanted can be grasped or that events will turn out for the best. Without hope, Jasmine wouldn’t have made it through all the dreadful events that occurred in the novel. When Jasmine accumulated what was left of her after the recent events in India, she got herself to move to the states. She traveled on ship and while on the long journey the unthinkable happened. On the ship ride to New York, Jasmine was raped. Today there are thousands and thousands of rape victims, and majority of them say that they will never be the same. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services surveyed the victim symptoms during the aftermath being raped. Some symptoms are nightmares, decreased appetite, eating disorders, menstrual pain, suicide attempts and post traumatic stress disorder. Being raped is a traumatizing event, and the overall effect of it depends on the way the victim handles it. A victim can see it as an event that can build character and strengthen them as a person or it could be the very thing that breaks them. Jasmine once again picked up her broken self and tried her best to get over the gruesome event. She got the New York, and there she began to rebuild herself from after the death of her husband and the rape. She made friends, left the past behind and moved toward her future. Hope played a role in this event because after being raped, she could have told herself that she didn’t want to move on, or that she was worthless,…
