Hawthorne's ambiguity and strong use of symbols have made this novel very complex and detailed. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many symbols to give insight into characters and promote his views on society. The scaffold scenes in The Scarlet Letter tell the reader exactly what is to come, and the presence of light in those scenes gives the reader insight into the characters.…

The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible both have main characters that can relate to each other even though they are in two different stories. Arthur Dimmesdale, one of the main characters of The Scarlet Letter, is a respected reverend in society that commits a horrendous and sinful act, adultery, with a woman named Hester Prynne. John Proctor, a main character from The Crucible, commits adultery as well with his servant, Abigail Williams. These two characters, aside from the others that have a role in the story, are perhaps the best comparison due to their similarities in flaws and differences in which the way they act. They are both different, because John holds a different personality compared to Arthur in how John is not as accepting to the truth as Arthur is. Also, Dimmesdale does not have a passion or desire to threaten anyone. Both of them are similar though, because they broke the moral and ethics of what they learned religiously, and committed adultery as a result. Although Proctor and Dimmesdale have many differences, they can relate in some ways with one another.…

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s American masterpiece The Scarlet Letter and Laura Hillenbrand’s captivating World War II nonfiction title Unbroken, undermines individuals who commit sinful acts to distinguish themselves from society as a means of self-individuality and resilience. Therefore, these individuals create an intriguing perception to the greater depths of society in order to generate a significant resonance that attributes to the psychological impact they intend to make. This often leads to individuals being criticized, punished, and condemned, because of their individual choices and discernible flaws. This emphasizes the society’s impressions, the recognition of sin and the essentially integral means of adapting to these types of unique circumstances.…

In chapter 8, Dimmesdale, Mr. Wilson, and Governor Bellingham are visited by Hester and Pearl at the Governor’s mansion. When pearl is asked “who made thee?”, she responds that she was not made, but rather "plucked . . . off the bush of wild roses that grew by the prison door.". This causes the governor and Mr. Wilson to immediately become horrified and ready to take Pearl from Hester’s custody. As Pearl protests her God given right for Pearls custody, she pleads that Dimmesdale speak for her. Dimmesdale uses religious appeal to convince the governor and Mr. Wilson that God gave Pearl to Hester and it is not their right to take the child away. He says that God gave Pearl to Hester as both “a blessing and a reminder of her sin”, which is the leading argument that convinces Bellingham and Mr. Wilson to leave Pearl in Hester’s custody. Dimmesdale uses a religious allusion in chapter 8 to convince them that they should leave Pearl to Hester’s custody and he is indeed successful in doing so. By Dimmesdale sticking up for Hester so easily and powerfully, it reveals that he has deep feelings for her and he is in some way responsible for he sin.…

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Awakening by Kate Chopin both strongly embody the way women were treated before women’s rights became less restricted to cooking, cleaning, and parenting. Hester Prynne and Edna Pontellier are both upper class women that cheated on their husbands. Although their situations were distinctly different, they relate to each other in several ways. Hester in the seventeenth-century and Edna in the nineteenth are great examples of the good and bad consequences of doing what you desire or what you think is right. These two women seem to have a lot in common, like how they feel towards their lovers; however, they differ in their feelings towards their children and they both have…

The scarlet letter and humiliation signalize the set of scaffold scenes as similar. The scaffold scenes mark important developments in the story. Sometimes there are scenes in one's life that specify the beginning middle and end, like Dimmesdale's. Other times we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for us. The begging, the middle, and the end will be different, sometimes more plainly than other times. Just remember, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Basically be prepared for whatever life throws your way and you will do great on the race of…
