To begin, schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder are fairly different disorders, but have some similarities. The first similarity, is a person with one of these disorders may have the symptom of hearing voices. Next, both disorders cause an individual to have complications while socializing, at work, and with relationships. Another similarity between the two disorders, is the symptom of depression. First, dissociative identity disorder is said to be caused by trauma in the earlier years of an individual. Usually, the reason why a person may develop a second personality, is to cope with the trauma they faced. While schizophrenia is said to be caused by a mix of genetics as well as environmental factors. Some symptoms of schizophrenia seem to be caused by the amount of dopamine found in the limbic system. Also, schizophrenia is found to be linked to a loss of brain tissue and a decrease in gray matter within the frontal lobe of the brain. Schizophrenia is typically treated by medications, and dissociative identity disorder is typically treated by different kinds of therapy. One example of a therapy that is used to treat dissociative identity disorder, is psychotherapy. To summarize, an individual that has the dissociative identity disorder, displays at least two separate personalities.
