Similarities Between Scotland And Catalonia
Catalonia and Scotland are two different countries in two distant parts of the world. They have one thing in common, both have held a series of independence referenda. They are both members of the European Union. Catalonia is a region of Spain that has been through some injustices and has been making steps to liberate itself from the Spanish central government. The area enjoys a great aspect of self-governance. It would wish to get it all, by being an independent state. The Spanish government has been reluctant in granting the region autonomy. The restriction is mostly based on the economic benefits that Spain gets from Catalonia. On the other hand, the central government is willing to grant Scotland independence. Scotland too has made several efforts towards its sovereignty. Currently, the region is looking forward to holding another independence referendum. A region cannot develop if they lack the liberty to govern themselves and have their voices heard, this is what the parts of Catalonia and Scotland need.

The vision for devolution and demand for self government dates back to 1979. A referendum was held, but was unsuccessful in relation to voting percentages. The cause for separatism also caused another reason for turbulence within the province of Quebec, as well as creates a divide within Quebecois society. “Ce discours, qui fusionne nationalisme et socialisme autour de l’idée de décolonisation, s’infiltre dans le débat qui fait alors rage au Canada français entre les nationalistes de droite ou non séparatives et la gauche antinationaliste, pour renvoyer les deux camps dos a dos” (Lapointe, 2008 pp. 299). Those who we’re anti-separatist we’re viewed as non-nationalist in the eyes of those who supported the separatist movement, and those who were against the separatist movement felt a sense of resentment towards those who viewed them as anti-nationalists. While whether or not separatism would be a necessary factor for movement is debated throughout Canada to this day, at this time, this idea was a relatively new and radical opinion. In fact the time period of the 1960s was the very beginning of the whisperings of Quebec sovereignty, with such organizations developing such as the Rassemblement pour l’Independence nationale or RIN. This invoked the development of the more radical parties such as the FLQ, which would go on to become a violent organisation that cast a darker shadow over the Quebecois separatist movement. Of…
