Similarities Between The Giver
The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry and the movie The Giver directed by Philip Noyce are based on a perfectly enclosed nirvana, taking place in a futuristic setting where choices are not yours. It is also thought as a Utopia, an endless party and everlasting harmony. However paradise, in this case, is not perfect, but who knows better?

One similarity between the book and the movie is the main characters, Jonas, who was able to go to Elsewhere with his youthful companion, Gabriel. Another similarity was the Giver’s link to Rosemary. Aside from being the previous Receiver, Rosemary was the Giver’s daughter. Asher and Jonas were best friends in both as well. Jonas was also able to transmit memories to Gabriel.     The first significant choice Jonas made is throwing the pill away. In this scene, Jonas receives the memory of love and family, by watching a Christmas morning with Grandparents, their children, and their Grandchildren. During the evening meal, he asks his family if they love him. They reply that is rude to ask, and love is a meaningless word. The next day, when Jonas wakes up in the morning, he decides to throw his pill away. “Something within him, something that had grown there through the memory, told him to throw the pill away.” (p. 129) The choice is significant because it changes Jonas and it changes the plot (later in the book). It shows that he can gain emotions, such as love, something restricted in the community. This will allow him to make more decisions, such as giving Gabe memories, and leaving the community which shows he’s a rebel. Giving Gabe memories leads to the changing of the plot by letting Gabe grow, or else he would be dead before Jonas knowing of death during release, which means Jonas has to save Gabe, Jonas’ only known family, or else he would die. Throwing the pill also changes the plot when Jonas leaves the community because Jonas fells the urge to save Gabe when he finds out he’s going to die in the morning. Jonas takes Gabe and runs away to Elsewhere where they hope for a better life. It is clearly shown that Jonas throwing away the pill is significant to the story.…

    Capital punishment throughout history has had many faces in our society. In the early twentieth century capital punishment was viewed as an integral part of the criminal justice system. In the United States alone approximately thirteen thousand people have been legally executed sine the colonial times (ACLU, 2003). By the 1930's up to 150 people were executed yearly, because of various legal challenges the execution rate was almost zero by 1967. In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court banned the practice of capital punishment, citing the death penalty as it was practiced, cruel and unusual punishment arbitrarily administered by the courts and thus unconstitutional in Furman v. Georgia (Costanzo, 18). In 1976, in Gregg v. Georgia, the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty stating that under guided discretion the courts again could impose capital punishment for crimes such as murder with special circumstances (Costanzo, 21). Since having the death penalty reinstated in 1976 by the Supreme Court, society has a whole still favors capital punishment, but because of the nature of the punishment there is still a split among society as to the appropriateness of the sanction. In today’s society there are those that are apposed and there are those that are in favor of the death penalty, but the majority still views capital punishment as a staple in the criminal justice system. Public opinion polls show approximately seventy percent of the U.S population currently approves of the use capital punishment (ACLU, 2003). Even with a high approval rate among the population in the United States there is still a large population of people with religious arguments against capital punishment, catholic society by the nature of humanity and evolution has realized that capital punishment is less and less a moral and ethical punishment for capital crimes such as murder.
