Both The Great Gatsby and Enduring Love explore the theme of obsession within their novel based around the idea of love for someone or something; an obsession which eventually leads to pain and ruin. The Great Gatsby is set in America, from spring to autumn in 1922. Published in 1925, Fitzgerald’s novel creates an impression of the wealth and prosperity of the ‘Jazz Age’. Nick explains how ‘Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores’, this shows how Gatsby’s ideal ‘American dream’ is corrupt
from the beginning, earning his money through crime and dishonesty in order to attract Daisy. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald portrays the theme of obsession through Jay Gatsby who confuses lust and obsession with love. For five years Gatsby waited; it seems that Gatsby masked his loneliness in his dreams of Daisy and not only wanted to capture her, but capture what she represented. Dreaming and hoping, a ‘green light’ would become a beacon of faith, and a signal of his wildest dreams. Gatsby was blinded by luxuries and possessions with his ‘silver shirt’ and ‘gold coloured tie’ yet didn’t realize money couldn’t buy happiness or his dream of Daisy. Gatsby’s lavish spending and taste for the exotic was for him to capture Dais, he understood that Daisy was drawn to expensive taste however; she was never attracted to his extravagant parties.
