In the two novels, “The Old Man and The Sea” and “The Road’ the authors, Cormac McCarthy and Ernst Hemmingway, explore the notion of limitless time surrounding the arduous and demanding journeys that the characters endure. It is important that we understand the interminable journey of both the old fisherman and the boy and his son. It is learnt in “The Road” that the boy is nine years old. It becomes clear through the flashbacks of the man that the boy was born at the start of the unnamed disaster. Aside from knowledge of the age of the boy, the novel delineates

It seems the narrator of the novel is an omniscient figure that interprets the story of the arduous journey of the Boy and the Man, whilst relocating his power into the Boy. McCarthy writes, ‘If the boy is not the word of God, then God never spoke.’ This quotation demonstrations that the boy is the religious figure that is keeping the Boy and the Man sane, and thus alive. Throughout the novel, the writing describes the man’s memories, dreams and thoughts. The majority of these emotions area portrayed through a God-like figure. Throughout the novel, the Man continues to mention that he and his son are the ‘good guys’ and that they are ‘carrying the fire.’ In many different scenarios the fire is a representation of the remaining ‘hope’ that the man and the boy have. Combinations of the ‘fire’, ‘hope’ and the ‘good guys’ are all connections to God. These connections are made ever clear through the survival of the Man and the Boy and that the way they were made to survive was through spirituality and God. Finally, the Boy and the Man meet and old man named Eli, after much persuasion from his son, the man gives in an offers Eli food. The name Eli is mentioned in the Bible, this is yet another biblical reference, therefore the ‘fire’ and ‘hope’ are shared with Eli and the strength of God has grown, allowing the Man and the Boy to survive for

A physical journey which involves the movement from one place to another can have lasting effects on an individual or group which can be mental, emotional, physical, or a combination. The effects and overall impact of a journey will depend on the characteristics of the particular journey undertaken. The composers of different texts all employ a number of different techniques to convey, to the reader, their ideas about a journey and the impact that the journey being taken may have on an individual or group. We see the different techniques employed by composers through Peter Skrzynecki’s Crossing the Red Sea and Immigrants at Central Station, Shirley Geok-lin Lims The Town Where Time Stands Still and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham.…

McCarthy has been very vague about the form and setting, from the opening pages, the reader still does not have a clear understanding of where exactly the novel is set or where ‘the man’ and ‘the boy’ are going. The month/date has not been clarified either as the narrative voice says ‘it could have been October’. The narrative voice talks about ‘the man’ and ‘the boy’ going south. Also the narrative mentions a ‘gas’ station and McCarthy has used a different spelling of particular words (gray instead of grey) which gives the hint that the novel is set in America.…

With the daunting task of facing a derelict, volatile world, an eight-year-old boy manages the unthinkable - survival. Cormac McCarthy illustrates how the boy in The Road encounters many obstacles during his childhood, and in spite of these hardships, resists numerous temptations to give up in life. The combination of growing up in a dysfunctional family as well as a bleak, barren, cataclysmic environment affects his psychological and physical development and makes his life extremely difficult to bear. The environment in which the boy inhabits is nothing short of hellish. As stated by Janet Maslin in her criticism of The Road, “the boy was born a few days after [the mother] and [father] ‘watched distant cities burn.’” (Maslin 2). The boy grows…

As a result, he is now a despondent young man who finds no value in prayer and no longer believes that living a good life means life will be good. After the daily work and roll call in front of everyone, as a punishment, anyone who disobeys the Nazis will be killed. And so, Eliezer witnesses the hanging of Pipel, a small child. “And so he remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes.”(65) How could God allow this cruelty? “And from within me, I heard a voice answer: ‘Where He is? This is where-hanging here from this gallows…’” (65) The idea of god allowing the hanging of a child for no reason reduces Eliezer’s belief in God’s protection and safety. As well as Eliezer’s overall sense of justice, stability, and fairness are much shaken. The burning of the innocent children in the beginning as he went left as a decision for his fate. “Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky.”(34) Why would Eliezer believe in a God that allows innocent children to be burned? At the end of the summer and Jewish year, “Why, but why would I bless him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of children to burn in his mass graves? Because He kept six crematories working day and night…” (67) How could god allow such things as those of burning innocent children? How could Eliezer have any faith in god if this is happening to those people who pray to him? Also the event in which a son kills his father because of starvation startled Eliezer and shakes his ideals of family, as well. As people throw bread at the Jews, in wagons, “Meir, my little Meir! Don’t you recognize me? … You’re killing your father… I have bread for you too…for you too…” (101) How could God allow all of this starvation? Enough torture and starvation to cause a son to kill…

His only reason to survive was to keep going in the hopes to find somewhere safe. The man with the bow and arrow shot at the father because he fears that the sin (god’s evilness) came to earth and made humanity terrible and violent. He shot at the father because he thought the father was an evil one. He cares about himself. The thief was similar to the bow and arrow man because he is finding supplies for himself. The man has the responsibility to protect the boy and keep him safe from the harm and evil. This makes him believe that doesn’t care for others and for humanity because most of it is destroyed and the rest will be extinct. Throughout the book the boy probably most often keeps his humanity more so than any other. It’s almost as if without him humanity would cease to exist. "You're not the one who has to worry about everything.” “He looked up, his wet and grimy face. Yes I am, he said. I am the one." (Cormac, 218) I was never very sure if the reason why he wanted to help others was because of who he was as a person or if it was due to the fact that he was just a child and it was matter of his innocence. There are numerous incidences of which this shows. For example, there’s a part in the novel where the man and the boy find a man struck by lightning on the side of the road. The man says that there was nothing that they can do for him. The boy becomes so overwhelmed he begins to cry right there on the spot because he too was helpless in this situation. Earlier they came across an old man by the name of Ely. His age made him fragile and the boy couldn’t help but recognize this. He was so set on feeding this man he had an argument with his father, the only other person he truly has in this world just because he wanted to help another. In the end the boy won, and Ely wound up staying with the…

On another hand, fire is a symbol of hope. In the darkness the fire of hope will set them free, and hope is what has brought them to this journey. For instance, ’’ What is it, Papa? Nothing. We’re okay. Go to sleep. We’re going to be okay, aren’t we Papa? Yes. We are. And nothing bad is going to happen to us. That’s right. Because we’re carrying the fire. Yes. Because we’re carrying the fire.’’( page 87).An other example was when it states,’’ In the evening they tramped out across a field trying to find a place where their fire would not be seen.’’(page 92) The farther and son believe that fire is the protection also hope for them. At night no people or adversaries are going to hurt because the fire is invisible and keep them in…
