Similarities Between Tom And Gatsby

Almost all persons know the importance of money. Some may think it’s more important to others. Tom and Gatsby are both men who understand money very well. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald writes about how Daisy’s relationship with Tom and Gatsby have similarities and differences. Tom and Gatsby are so different, even their similarities have differences. They both love her very much but they do so differently. Daisy is very important to both of them, maybe one more than the other. Tom and Gatsby’s relationships with Daisy differ. Even though Gatsby has not seen Daisy in five years, he still loved her very much and stayed loyal the whole time. This shows that Gatsby loves Daisy so much that he would stay lonely and hopeful for years just for her. Gatsby never gave up hope during the time that they were apart. Tom has an affair on Daisy with Myrtle. This shows that Tom isn’t loyal to Daisy and he doesn’t put any effort into their relationship. Tom really uses Myrtle to satisfy one of his needs and Daisy to satisfy another. Gatsby was the only one willing to work and put effort towards him and Daisy while Tom took his and Daisy’s relationship for granted.
Tom has an apartment in the city that he lives at half of the time. Tom doesn’t feel the need to keep this life a secret from Daisy because he knew she wouldn’t and won’t leave him for it. Gatsby doesn’t want to tell Daisy about the 5 years apart because he’s embarrassed because the stories Daisy has heard weren’t true. The truth would make Gatsby look like a nobody compared to Daisy.
