Historical fiction novel
‘I am Juliet’ is a historical fiction novel set in the Elizabethan era. This book creates a sense of historical time by addressing issues that people faced in that time and ensuring that this book was related to the Elizabethan era.
A major issue that existed in the Elizabethan era was young girls at a very young age being married to older men. Through the book it show different peoples opinion of this. A prime example of this is when Juliet says “what could a girl say in a world of men? Except queens, queens are different”, this shows how little rights women had and that they were unable to voice their opinion. Juliet’s view helps us get an understanding of stereotypical girls view in that era.
This book not only shows a stereotypical view it also shows the main character Juliet break out of stereotypes. She leaves to find her own love which shows u another side of this era. “What is a girl? Born of her family, fed by her nurse, dressed by her maids, kept from the world by her garden walls. But I had seen another life: the world where a woman crossed the sea to find her love; where a woman’s tales were read hundreds of years after her name and home were lost.” This book shows some characters that break stereotypes, which changes our view about the Elizabethan era.
This text descries the way people talked in the Elizabethan era as well. This book portrays the language from the Elizabethan era formal, polite and non-colloquial. An example of this I the way that characters talk such as “ A statue had no father nor mother that her heart should freeze like this”, through this language we can see that they use formal English language that would not be used in our time period.
The Elizabethan era is depicted in this book as an era of formal language and a time in which ladies other than the queen has no say.
