Similarities Between Year Of Wonders And The Crucible
in the book year of wonders and the play The crucible, both of the antagonist and protagonists all seek conformity within the troubled towns as the plague happens in the year of wonders and the witch trials happening in the crucible. With all the town people in panic they look for something to follow, which leads them to religion where they have their own rules and regulations to help guide them through each crisis.
Even though both the scenarios were over-exaggerated, there was no way to tell if it was just a coincidence or if god had sent them a ‘trail’ for the people to face, for year of wonders it was just a piece of infected cloth that turned into the plague, while in the crucible it was girls taking advantage of the stupid religious people

In 1953, Arthur Miller wrote a novel called The Crucible. This book is set in 1962 and it tells the story of the infamous witch trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts. Throughout this whole story we find that greed, revenge, and hysteria affected much of what happened in Salem. From Abigail Williams's lust for John Proctor, to the hysteria throughout the trials, and to Abigail's accusation on Tituba; greed, revenge, and hysteria was shown rampant in Salem during these times. I believe that greed, revenge, and hysteria presented in the book, destroyed the town and the people of Salem, Massachusetts. This book really shows how slight misconceptions of innocent individuals can create uterpandimony. Many people who were thought to be Godly…

The symbolic nature of bird could be considered to be highly contrasting when comparing Geraldine Brooks’s ‘Year Of Wonders’ and Arthur Miller's ‘The Crucible’. In ‘Year of wonders’ Brook’s uses bird imagery, in particular “birdsong” in order to create a pleasant (Pheasant.. HA!) and light hearted tone often symbolising hope such as in the case of praying towards an almighty father. The birdsong acting as a way in which the people find the holy spirit, which is often represented by a white dove in Christian theology, even in the plague ridden times they find themselves trapped in. Contrastingly Miller uses Bird to symbolise the truth, or lack of.…

The physical and social settings of both The Crucible and Year of Wonders illustrate very different views and beliefs of both towns which links with how each village deals with major crises. The town of Salem in The Crucible is very dreary and structured with little colour. Whereas, the town of Eyam in Year of Wonders thrives off the beauty of nature and the vibrant colours of the green grass and trees. We can compare the Salem meeting house, which Act three is primarily set in, with the passage in Year of Wonders describing the nature in the village putting pity on “those who live in towns and do not learn to love” nature in its true forms. The Crucible stage directions illustrate the plain, dull room where they meet and we can compare it…

Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” and the “Good Night, and Good Luck” are similar. Both deal with unfounded accusations, defenseless victims and paranoia. Edward R. Murrow, the star of the movie “Good Night, and Good Luck”, is fighting against Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1950’s phenomenon labeled “The Red Scare” in which McCarthy is accusing many Americans of being Communist. Arthur Miller shows this same sort of fight in his play “The Crucible”. The book deals with the Salem Witch Trials and their overwhelming affect on the town and on American society at that time. Miller’s characters John Proctor in “The Crucible” and Edward Murrow in the “Good Night, and Good Luck” both fought for a good cause; the innocence and good name of the innocent.…

Living under a strict society where the system and all of its components were based on God, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Judge Danforth from Arthur Miller's The Crucible were bound to suffer from the Puritan values which they believed in during the Puritan era. After thoroughly analyzing both Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Arthur Miller's The Crucible, it is evident that Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Judge Danforth were notably victimized by the Puritan ethics of body politic and the statute of God as the law. Even though Dimmesdale and Danforth held different powers in their society, their positions were threatened or destroyed by the ethic of body politic, and they were ultimately…

In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Salem Witch Trials can compare to the American Revolution which both are major events in American history in which a society caved in on itself. Some of the factors that led up to the Salem witch trials were when a group of young girls had accused several local women of committing witchcraft. Another factor that led up to the Salem Trials was that, Ann Glover, an Irish-born Gaelic-speaking Roman Catholic housekeeper for the Goodwin family in Boston, was accused of witchcraft by the Goodwins' daughter Martha. Martha and several siblings had exhibited strange behavior: fits, flapping of hands, animal-like movements and sounds, and strange contortions. Glover was tried and convicted of witchcraft, with…

THE GREAT GATSBY uses symbols to represent the hollowness of the upper class. East vs West is the first symbol he uses to make a separation between old and new rich. Another symbol are the unread books, which represents Gatsby as a fake; as a person who wants to show something he really isn’t. Daisy’s voice is the third symbol, and it represents the ambitious mind he had towards money. The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 is a political allegory, based on the Salem witch trials. During its time, it was used to inform people about the horrid nature of the accusations which took place during the Red Scare. In 1996, director Nicholas Hynter released a film adaptation of Miller’s play. Despite popular belief, movie adaptations hold just as much significance as the original written text. Both the text and its visual counterpart are created to convey a message, just in their own respective ways. As authors use literary devices to create meaning and convey themes within their texts, directors use movie techniques. A technique like lighting can be used to characterize, while visual symbolism can allude and foreshadow, and zooming can create a greater…
