the setting takes place in Salem, Massachusetts and this is a key indicator where Hawthorne was going with this story. Salem, Massachusetts in the 1800s was known for hanging people due to the fact they were accused by certain members in the area of being the devil.The community respected the legacy of goodman brown's family it is known that they are very pious people. And growing up in this shadow it's easy to be influenced by the individuals who take care of you but as time went on goodman brown started to drift away from this so this can be considered to be the dark side. Eventually, Goodman Brown found out that his grandfather and father had done evil things “ I helped your grandfather, the constable when he lashed the Quaker woman”(81).
