Summary
In the literary critic “Simon” an overview of Lord of the Flies mainly focuses on Simon, and the discovery of the true beast being within. Simon is considered a Christ figure, he proves his point by referring to passages about Simon from Lord of the Flies and references to the bible. Simon is introduced as a choir boy, then suggesting Simon’s characteristic of the “holy idiot.” Simon does many actions similar to those of Christ; Simon defending Piggy and the other boys, is the equivalent to Jesus defending Mary Magdalene. In the New Testament it was said that Jesus was mocked by the centurion, which had a striking resemblance to Simon getting laughed at by the other boys. Simon is portrayed as a God-like character who goes through the struggle of what is the right thing to do. Donald R. Spangler was able to show two different key topics; Simon has a very close relation to Christ, and conflict is found within yourself. Spangler was able to remain unbiased through his healthy balance of conflict and evidence to support his claims. By Spangler being able to identify the striking similarities Overall, I believe this article was great with supporting my thesis.
Reflection
This literary critic was able to show the audience how difficult if can be to choose between doing what's right and doing what society pleases. Simon is the Christ figure in the book who is very easily able to see the truth about various events, and he goes above and beyond for others. While Simon is trying to figure out the truth of the beast, he is also trying to figure out the truth between Ralph and Jack, which are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
