Discuss how 19th century photography was utilised to construct notions of social and cultural identity. Examine at least one image from the 19th century as well as at least one example of a contemporary portrait that has a resonance with these earlier practices.

Photography’s influence on modern day is so vast that it is practically impossible to imagine a world without such technology. Due to the great deal of photography surrounding us, we have gradually become accustomed to the impact photography has on our social and cultural identity, that we no longer notice just how much it affects us and the world. He has no interest in the character traits of the subjects he shoots; he is only interested in their physical attributes. Obarzanek uses the same method of observing, exploring and recording the human being as anthropologists once did. Obarzaneks’ ‘80 faces’ is a series of black and white mug shot portraits of teenagers’ aged 14-17. He focuses on the face at its most basic shape, scale and proportion of features. The portraits are always presented in groups engaging spectators to compare and contrast the faces.     The search for visual truth is a continuing quest. A pondering of ontology pushes our efforts and abilities as a homogenous culture to question and challenge identity within the visual boundaries of technology and time. Building upon the visual codes and methods of the past, the relatively young medium of photography conveys the surrounding subjects in true aesthetic representation. We surround ourselves with images of the past wistfully longing for what some consider a better, more civilized time. Photographs-- especially those of people, of distant landscapes and faraway cities, of the disintegrating past-- are inspirations to reverie. The sense of the unattainable that can be evoked by a photograph feeds directly into the erotic feelings of those for whom desirability is enhanced by distance or a longing to reactivate a past moment, feeling or experience.     Much alarmed, we did so, he was insistent. Underneath the floorboards were the arms, legs, head, and torso of a human body. I could not look long, the corpse was so mutilated.     Forensic Dentistry is used as a major part in solving cases where people are unidentifiable. Forensic evidence is any evidence that can be legally used in a court of law. Many people know what forensics are because of shows such as Bones, Criminal Minds, and Without a Trace. What most people don’t know are the minor details that have to be sought out when using any forensics to solve a case. Odontology; commonly referred to as dental forensics is highly unrecognized by the general population and can be very useful in forensic science. In forensic science odontology is used to identify the unknown in many unique situations, and can act as evidence in the court of law. Even though most people don’t know about the growing scientific art Odontology, the history goes back decades. Dental forensics began around 66 A.D., although the study wasn’t as useful as today’s due to the lack of technology it was still useful to those who chose to use it. During World War II the study of Odontology was used to identify both Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. Odontology isn’t a specific job on its own; it is studied by dentists, hygienists and other forms of specialists who have correct knowledge about the oral cavity. These citizens work together using the technology created to help in the identification of the deceased. Two common technological systems that are important in finding the records needed in Odontology are the panto morphograph registry and CAPMI (Computerized Assisted Postmortem Identification System). CAPMI was developed by the U.S. Army Dental Research institute. Many other kinds of databases have been created to help aid in the study of Dental forensics. Together the knowledge of those who choose to study the oral cavity, and the people dedicated to help broaden today’s dental databases has changed the outlook on what can possibly be achieved in the future.     While reading Benjamin’s “A little History of Photography” it could be seen that the precision of a portrait magically can pass on the individuality of the person photographed.
