It is set in (2016) modern-day. Most scenes are in the “McDillard Mental Facility”, a mental hospital that isn’t real. Inside is only, mainly white. White walls, white clothes, white faces, and white lies. There are many rooms that address issues from rehab to X-ray scans.
The Lux is another term for the mental institution for Sina. The Aliovorsum is another term for the outside world/ elsewhere. The Umbra is essentially death, but Sina doesn’t know that. The Umbra is a somewhat safe-haven from the Lux and a place that brings all happiness.

A C T O N E
Scene One
It is a cool, fall day. Inside the thirteenth room of the left hallway on the sixth floor, SINA is staring at a piece of paper and holding a pen. Her room resembles a prison cell rather than a hospital room. There are two beds on opposite sides of a lonely barred window. Small nightstands on opposite sides of the beds hold small belongings. There is one dresser with a mirror next to the door’s left. On the door’s right is a desk that has several scratches.
VOICE OVER: They call me Sina. But I know I am 61381016. It says so on my wrist wrap. They say odd things around me like “You’ll be okay. Only a couple more weeks! Drink this, you’ll feel better. Here, have some. How have you been feeling? What color is this? Does he look happy or sad? Color this. Pick a number. ” Stuff like that. I never respond. (Pause.) I have no need to.
(The sound of keys opening SINA’s door.)
GREY MAN ONE: Ma’am, it’s time for your appointment.
SINA: (Gets up from the desk and walks to the door.)
Scene Two
GREY MAN ONE and GREY MAN TWO escort SINA through the hospital. As they walk, they pass by some windows that display the crisp autumn leaves. They pass by some groups of families each with a patient being the center of attention. SINA watches blankly as some smile and some cry.
VOICEOVER: I call this place ‘The Lux.’ It means ‘light’ in Latin. It’s not a light you wish to see, it’s a light that you can’t avoid. A secretive, almost mysterious light. A light that can provide happiness or sorrow. A light that blinds the mind from thinking.
(She is brought to a silent, all-white observation room for her appointment. SINA sits in a chair. WHITE LADY enters.)
WHITE LADY: Hello, Sina. How are you today?
(SINA stares at the white table silently.)
WHITE LADY: Sina? Sina? Sina!
(SINA continues to blankly stare at the table.)
WHITE LADY: (Sighs.) 61381016, how are you today?
SINA: (Looks up and makes eye contact. She continues to stay quiet.)
VOICEOVER: I call her the White Lady. She only ever wears white and always comes to see me. My name’s not “Sina.” It’s 61381016.
WHITE LADY: (Smiles.) I’ll take that as a sign you are well. Let’s begin. Pick a color. (Shows a range of paint cards.) Red, white, yellow, blue, green, orange, or purple?”
SINA: (Stays quiet for a while.) White.
WHITE LADY: (Smiles as if she is relieved of a burden.) Okay nice warm up. Now, let’s play a game! Sina, what comes after the number one?
SINA: Two.
WHITE LADY: What about the seven numbers after that?
SINA: Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
WHITE LADY: Very good! (Claps.) Do you know the game of sudoku? It has to do with those numbers.
(SINA continues to be quiet and shrugs.)
WHITE LADY: Sina, are you listening?
(SINA shrugs again as she stares at the paper with eighty-one boxes.)
Scene Three
SINA is being walked back to her room by GREY MAN ONE and GREY MAN TWO. She is off in her own thoughts again.
VOICE OVER: I don’t get it. What’s the point of doing those little boxes? White Lady dismissed me when she saw she couldn’t get me to touch it. She called the Grey Men, the ones who always take me places. I don’t get why, the Lux is a quiet, safe place. It’s easy to get around. Except when someone tries to go to the Aliovorsum. The ‘Aliovorsum’ is Latin for ‘elsewhere.’ Out there is where you are in danger, don’t go there. There is one place I want to go to. The Umbra. It means ‘shadow’ in Latin. This is where the mind can be at ease and be hidden. No blinding, no using, just free.
GREY MAN TWO: (Opens bedroom door.) Please go in, ma’am.
(SINA walks in and stares at her bed as they lock and close her door. She turns to look back at her door. She looks as if she saw something. As if something was calling her. She stays there, waiting.)
A C T TWO
Scene One
SINA is in her bedroom again, staring at a piece of paper with a pen just about to touch
it.
VOICE OVER: Today, I’m getting what they call a ‘roommate.’ They call her ‘Louise.’ But I know that’s she’s like the others and me. Her ‘bracelet’ or wrist wrap will tell her.
(LOUISE enters with the Grey Men and with her parents. They talk quietly among themselves.)
LOUISE’S MOTHER: Just one month. You’ll be alright.
(LOUISE stays quiet. SINA looks at her and recognizes the fact they both don’t talk. Eventually, LOUISE’s parents leave.)
LOUISE: Hello, I’m Louise. (She puts her hand out to shake.)
(SINA nods her head and grabs her rubik’s cube.)
LOUISE: You must be Sina, right?
SINA: No, I’m 61381016.
LOUISE: That’s too long. I’m going to call you Sina.
SINA: (Shakes head.) I’m 61381016.
LOUISE: Okay then, I’ll call you 613.
(SINA nods her head.)
VOICE OVER: She proceeded to tell me everything about herself. I didn’t care. She said things like:
LOUISE: I’m in here because my parents drove me crazy! I’m not crazy! You know what I don’t care.
VOICE OVER: Neither did I.
Scene Two
A week passed and SINA has gotten used to LOUISE’s rambling. In their room, SINA sits on her bed and LOUISE draws in a notebook.
LOUISE: Are you nuts?! You want to die?
SINA: Going to the Umbra isn’t dying. It’s freedom.
LOUISE: You must be out of your mind!
SINA: No, you are. The Umbra is a place of peace and quiet. They said I have a couple weeks.
LOUISE: You really are out of your mind! I tell you what. Let’s escape! I hate this place! And if you’re (Uses air quotations.) leaving, then it’s the right time!
SINA: Are we escaping to the Umbra?
LOUISE: 613! We’re going to the- uh, Aliovorsum!
SINA: No. I do not went to venture there. That is where people kill people. That is where fire can be used to deliberately hurt someone. That is where people attack others based on a prejudice. I’m not going.
(LOUISE almost replied but just rolled her eyes. She was already developing a plan. LOUISE rolls up her sleeves as she paces around the small area. SINA notices her scars.)
SINA: Louise, why did you cut?
LOUISE: (She nervously stops pacing and stares at the floor. She pulls her sleeves down.) 613, can you tell me why you’re here first?
SINA: I don’t remember. It’s been two years. I only remember the Umbra.
(LOUISE nods and quietly shuffles around.)
SINA: You don’t have to answer. I’m just curious.
LOUISE: (Whispers.) Thank you.
LOUISE and SINA slowly go back to doing the normal. LOUISE draws and SINA picks up a pen and stares at a sheet of paper.
VOICE OVER: For the first time, I felt something. (Pause.) I felt guilt.
Scene Three
It’s been two weeks since LOUISE has been in ‘Lux.’ LOUISE and SINA are having a conversation about their escape.
VOICE OVER: They gave Louise a new marble, or what she says “drug.” I think it’s been making her cough. A newbie a couple months ago did the same thing. Now he’s like us. I like Louise. I don’t want her to be like us.
LOUISE: So I decided that we’ll go to Redmond. I know a few people who can help us, I think. We can’t go to Seattle because my family’s there. They sent me here, therefore they don’t love me. And so I don’t love them! And besides I only need-
SINA: Louise, will you go the Umbra with me?
LOUISE: 613, I already said no. And besides as I was saying I only need…
VOICE OVER: Maybe becoming one of us would be a good thing. She’ll understand why going to the Umbra is so nice.
(LOUISE gets escorted out of the room to an appointment. She comes back in a couple minutes. SINA stares at her as she sits down solemnly on her bed.)
LOUISE: I have another month here.
SINA: (Long silence.) That’s-
LOUISE: -not good. My escape plan was supposed to fall into the time I’m supposed to leave. I hate this life. Any life is better than this. (She buries her face into her hands as a way to hide her stress and tears.)
VOICE OVER: A life in the Umbra is.
