A penitentiary system is necessary to house convicted criminals. The United States penitentiary system currently suffers from mass incarceration, with the highest incarceration rate in the world, having more 2 million people incarcerated and thereby making up almost 22% of the entire worlds prison population (“Mass Incarceration in the USA,” 1). Sweden, on the other hand, has a prison population of 5,245 (Öberg, 1). A country’s overall population certainly is a key factor in the previous numbers stated, yet, if you look at the incarceration rate per 100,000 people, the number incarcerated in the United States is 666 and 53 in Sweden. This is a huge difference, one that demands answers. The United States is often depicted as encompassing a prison system that preys on minorities and the mental ill, resulting in overcrowded prisons with high rates of recidivism. These conditions can easily foster unfit treatment and abuse with an emphasis on punishment as a form of correction as opposed to a focus on rehabilitation. Sweden, on the other hand, has emphasized their support behind rehabilitation in the prison system, resulting in lowered crime and incarceration rates for its citizens. Sweden’s number of inmates is steadily continuing to drop as the United States simultaneously rises. These outcomes highlight a core difference in the prison institutions in…
Norway’s recidivism rate was measured to be 20% over a two-year period in 2005 (Fazel) and continues to keep their rates under 30% today (Kofman). Per 100,000,000 people, only 72 people are incarcerated per year in Norway. In comparison, The United States was measured to arrest 710 people per 100,000 people in 2013(The Hamilton Project) and to have a 60% recidivism rate (Kofman). America is in the lead in incarceration and recidivism as shown in Figure 1 (Appendix A). Being lead in incarceration rates (Petersilia), the United States has over 2.2 million Americans in prison whereas Norway’s prison population in 10% of that on a per capita basis (Kofman).…

The differences between Norway’s incarceration system and the United States system can be seen as a considerably large gap. Norway can be seen as the motivating, free spirit type of prison, where as the United States is more reserved, but strict at the same time type of prison. On the contrary, Norway and the United States may be different, but there is still a hint of likeness within the two countries. One might be slightly more different, but as long as they help and hold the prisoners that have done wrong then that’s what matters. The truth is that no matter what anybody does, people will always find the differences,--as well as a few similarities within Norway and the United States’ incarceration systems.…
The criminal justice system consists of three phases the police, courts and corrections. The focus of the criminal justice system is to ensure justice for all, by punishing the accused and rehabilitate while providing for the innocent (Garside, 2008). As the nation 's social, economic and technology age experience some key modifications, abroad crimes are pushing different challenges for the criminal justice systems. The most significant change is the growth of international crimes. These changes are forcing the criminal justice system to adapt to the changes in the types of crimes being committed and a growing need to understand the significance of how these crimes threaten the American borders. This paper will evaluate the globalization impact on the criminal justice system, compare and contrast the international criminal justice system, assess how cybercrime and technology affects the justice system. In the discussion will also be how the policing systems differ on a global spectrum, and identify some of the major crimes that affect the justice systems.…
First Off, the United States has more people locked up behind bars more than any other nation and for smaller crimes. The article states that the United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population. But it has almost a quarter…
Since 2002, the United States has had the highest incarceration rate in the world. Although prison populations are increasing in some parts of the world, the natural rate of incarceration for countries comparable to the United States tends to stay around 100 prisoners per 100,000 population. The U.S. rate is 500 prisoners per 100,000 residents, or about 1.6 million prisoners in 2010, according to the latest available data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Prison is a place used for internment of convicted criminals. Not including the death penalty, a sentence to prison is the harshest punishment inflicted on criminals in the United States. On the federal level, imprisonment or incarceration is managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a federal…
In Australia, during 2010 there was approximately 38 young people incarcerated per 100,000, and this is why many believe the incarceration of youth to be one of the biggest issues in Australia. While these figures have dropped dramatically since 1981, many believe it can be lowered further. South Australia’s youth are prosecuted in accordance to the Young Offenders Act of 1993, which applies to youth between the ages of 10-17. This act aims to maintain social cohesion and progress, and it attempts to do this by assisting young people at risk from becoming involved in criminal activity, and to prevent reoffending through the provision of appropriate services and programs. Many members of the public believe, that the incarceration of the youth is not only ineffective and unnecessary, but also damaging the youth and causing recidivism, and instead we should follow…
erby Paul Cross-national and Comparative Research Cross-national and comparative research in many ways is useful for criminology and the criminal Justice System (CJS). First, studying different nations and countries can open up new ways of thinking for researcher (criminologist). Instead of looking at crime rates in ones nations through a “tunnel vision”, researcher can now view similar nations and their own with a brand new understanding. Second, Cross-national research in the long term will enable researcher and CJS to adapt to criminal behaviors faster and more efficiently than before. Third, during comparative research can be a motivation for new researcher to explore the world and expand their knowledge. Although there are several…
If capital punishment worked; surely America would have the lowest murder rate in the whole world? However, statistics do not support this idea as their murder rate is increasing every year and their prisons known as ‘Death Row’ are brimming with convicts awaiting execution.…
The relationship between poverty and crime has been a controversial subject over the years. Many scholars argue that poverty does not have a causal relationship to crime because there are countries in which poverty is very high but the crime rate is relatively low. I would say that in this country it would be hard to argue that there is not a…

When looking at the criminal justice system in the United States, it may be difficult to conjure up any substantive level of optimism. A problem that permeates almost every facet of society, our system of justice contains many complex and deep-seeded flaws. As a result, it is difficult to indicate a singular issue as “the biggest problem.” However, when push comes to shove, it appears that recidivism is the biggest issue in the United States criminal justice system, though there may exist the potential for strategies to successfully combat the problem.…
