As a deputy who attended a paramilitary academy for three months, I now appreciate the intense training we had to undergo to pass. The strict schedule we had to adhere to helped manifest dedication to time and organization, which is beneficial to being in law enforcement. One wrong move, one wrong word, one small lapse in judgment, sent instructors into screaming fits where personal space went out the door and their words sprayed onto your face. Punishments varied from push-ups and squats to crawling across hot asphalt until your hands were raw. Sleep was minimal, rooms and uniforms were up to military standards, and training classes varied in types and length. Detail and commitment are two main daily objectives that I believe make this style of academy so important for producing well-equipped officers. Every hardship endured there is applicable to every shift occurrence and the training prepared us for everything from basic traffic stops to mass riots and shootings. Retention is a huge struggle across America for police and sheriff’s departments. From heightened public scrutiny to burnout and trauma exposure, more officers are resorting to resignation and retirement (Snider, 2023). The only negative side to this is the length away from family is hard on the recruitment process and I feel like they could still have the same impact and effect on trainees while also making this experience easier on men and women with a family at home that still wish to protect and serve their
