The Author that I will be writing about is Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh was once an English explorer and writer. Raleigh’s most famous thing that he has done is the establishment of a colony called “Roanoke Island”. The colony is also known as the “Lost Colony”. Raleigh was one of the main people who was involved in the exploration of North America, He also established the colony “Virginia” he named this colony after the Virgin Queen Elizabeth. Once he got out he planned a trip to set sail to a place called El Dorado which is also known as the land of gold. Instead of this trip Raleigh helped out England and Ireland the understanding of potatoes and tobacco. When Raleigh had first brought over Tobacco to England they saw tobacco as good health which we know is false now and the saw potatoes as a suspicious item for some reason. When Raleigh introduced Tobacco to the Continent it was greatly used. They claimed that tobacco was capable of curing toothache, worms, lockjaw, and even cancer! But now we all know that tobacco use is the number one reason to get cancer now. The colonist began to rage when smoking tobacco from pipes became a thing, they ended up taking it to court because it bothered the colonist so much. Raleigh had even tried encouraging the Queen to try doing it and when the whole population started to use it, it became a big concern. King James I had wrote a little summary pretty much stating that tobacco was very harmful to the colonist and that it was loathsome to the nose, and that it was harmful to inhale because it can lead to bad build up in the lungs. James wanted to put an import tax on tobacco and he hoped that it would want people to stop using it and bringing it around because it disgusted him and the colonist. The Catholic Church even got involved with the whole situation. The church said that it was sinful and they wanted the use of tobacco banned in holy places. By the way Sir Walter Raleigh was a Catholic as well so the church wasn’t a huge fan of him introducing this trend to the people. Even though all these warnings were given it had been proven that indeed tobacco was very hard to quit and not the healthiest choice. Jamestown, Virginia was the first successful colony to grow tobacco. Their first batch of tobacco was sent over to England and
