To start off with, the history of sirens starts with them being birds, vicious creatures with the head of a women. After the goddess of marriage, childbirth and Zeus’s wife, Hera challenged the Muses at a signing contest. The Muses are goddesses of songs, dance, and music also, they were known to be an inspiration to poets. The Muses were daughters of Zeus. It is unsure why Hera challenged the Muses, but I believe that Hera challenged the Muses as a way to get out of her marriage with …show more content…
Zeus. Zeus tricked Hera when she was caring for a bird; thus, Zeus saw a chance to take advantage of Hera and he raped her. To cover up the shame she felt, she married him. The challenged was won by the Muses, so the viscous, bird like sirens, were no longer as viscous and didn’t look like birds. The sirens were no longer able to fly and their feathers were plucked off by the Muses. The Muses wear the sirens’ feathers as crowns to remember their victory.
Next, the powers that the sirens can obtain are far more interesting than a mermaids.
The sirens are also known as ‘Sea Sirens’, the personality and appearance of the sirens was all sexually attractive to whoever they came encountered with. The sirens beauty known to reflect wondrous treasures and powers of the sea itself. The sirens did not just have a seductive body, of half human and half fish. The sirens also had a high pitched voice that then they sang, they had everyone mesmerized. The sirens lured sailors to their deaths when they would be close to their home, Anthemoessa, the sea between Sicily and Italy. They would lure the sailors into horrible weather. Also, the sirens would also help sailors who had gone overboard. The sirens were disliked by women. The sirens would not only help save, destroy sailors, they would also try to find someone to fall in love with, that is why the women disliked them because they would take their men and turn them into 'mermen'. The sirens are also looked as kind creatures in today’s
world.
Lastly, the role of sirens is to lure sailors away from their home, Anthemoessa, the sea between Sicily and Italy. The sirens would lure them into dangerous storms or have them crash on the side of a rock next to their home. The sirens are secluded and like it to be that way; thus, they would sing and they wound make the sailors lose their sense in direction. After the sailors would crash into the side of the rocks, the sirens would use the remains of their bones and uses to make music. The sirens used the sailors bone to help make more lovely music. Even though the sirens role is not a good role to have, it is still a great thing to be able to do, who wouldn’t like to make a man lose his sense in direction.
In conclusion, the sirens are like mermaids only in my opinion better. For the following reasons, the history of how they became who they are, the powers that they contain and the role that they had back then. Even though they lured sailors to their deaths, it is still incredible the way they did it. In today’s world, no one travels by ships anymore which makes it difficult for someone to try to find sirens. The sirens keep to themselves nowadays.
