She is well-dressed and a better educated women in her community despite the fact that she is black. When the narrator refers to her as "the richest white women in town" you can tell that the author is at awe with Sister Flower. She is four years my junior but sometimes talks to me like I am the younger one. We have very different character traits. She is the independent, stubborn one with a mind of her own. She speaks her mind even though it might hurt the one getting it. She handles affairs of the heart with very decisive moves. She cares for family members in very practical ways. If she knows that I will be staying over at my mum's place, she would prepare my breakfast for the next day for me. For every restaurant that she eats at, she will check out the vegetarian menu for me. If there is a decent spread of vegetarian items, she will send me an sms. She is very generous with gifts for family members. She is buying me a TV for my new apartment.

We are very close as sisters despite the very big difference in personality. She will check that I am not too soft-hearted or get "bullied" in relationships. She even told my husband (my boyfriend then) off a few times when we were discussing the wedding plans last year.

I stayed over at my mum's place last night. As we watched TV together in our parents' room, I was massaging her left shoulder for her. I kept nagging that she must be not having some right posture for her very frequent yoga lessons. I could feel some veins on the left side of her back very obviously strained. "Then just massage more lor! We are Sister Flowers, right?!" - was her usual curt answer.

When I think of the word sisterhood, I think of more than one individual sharing a blood-like connection. A sister is someone who you can talk to when you can't talk to anyone else. Someone you can get into an argument with and laugh within the next second because you know each other didn't mean it in a harmful way. She is someone who can make you laugh when you feel like crying, and will always keep it 100 with you by not telling you what you want to hear but what you need to hear. That someone you can depend on to be your rock when everything else is shaky. I believe that sisterly love means to accept your sister for what and who she is flaws and all.…

Millie is the most significant character because she is destine for change. The title “Millie’s Mother’s Red Dress” is also significant because the poem is more so about Millie in the end. The mother has many other children but places significance on Millie. Millie’s mother saw that she was the only on that could possibly change, and have a balance of selfishness and selflessness. Millie is the youngest of her siblings, and has not started a family. Which makes her the best advocate for change. The mother doesn’t want Millie to follow in her path. She tells Millie “Do me the honor, Millie, Of not following in my footsteps Promise me that.” Before she took her turn in death Millie promised her mother. Millie promised her mother that she would be the protagonist of the…

In comparison of the two critics, Mendoza and Casey miss each other’s points as I found Mendoza ’s essay a little confusing because he’d further explained the relation of consumer desire and the poem with Karl Marx’s theory of commodity fetishism which was a little confusing to understand in his essay. I do not understand why he would mention Marx’s theory when his main focus was about sexual and consumer desire. On the other hand, Casey’s essay stay focused on the main points of the essay and explained what sisterhood mean in the poem. She’d further explained what sisterhood mean by expanding it of the traditional role of women and men.…

As an illustration, the low angle used on multiple occasion on Mother Sister when she sat by the window made her character appear tremendously important. Furthermore, the angle at which she was captured made it very easy to understand she was meant to be seen as a very respected figure: Always looking out for those who surrounded her and as someone meant to maintain the love and peace in the community. Similarly, close up angle shots were also extremely important to convey the film’s theme. This may be justified by continuing analyzing Mother Sister’s Character. To demonstrate, at the end of the film, viewers witness a scene in which this respected and strong character lost all her composure and strength. By closing up on mother sister, viewers saw mother sister as a vulnerable character for the first time; essentially enabling viewers to further understand the gravity of the…

“Hope and I met, usually in my bedroom, to discuss how “the other two” were doing,” (McKinley 22) After Grace’s, Beauty’s older sister, loses her fiancée at sea she sits quietly and expressionless doing nothing along with her Father who has just lost his fortune. This shows Beauty is responsible, caring and willing to help. “Grace and Hope divided the house-work between them, and I did what was left over, the odds and ends that were neither house work nor shop work;” (McKinley 48) Beauty is not like the average girl. Back then the women did the house work while the men worked in…

The narrator, Amanda Coyne, begins her essay from the mother’s perspective. She describes herself visiting her sister in Federal Prison Camp with her nephew. The story is focused on the relationship of separated children and their imprisoned mothers. The narrator describes the mother’s unusual response to their children in regards to the smell of the flowers bouquet. The way that mothers were referring to the smell so significant gives a visualization of a deep longing and separation in their hearts. The common use of anecdotes and juxtaposition in this writing stands out as a useful tool to describe the characters. The use of a brief narrative to describe kids shows a bit of resentment children.…

    Sadie Maud Essay

    • 827 Words

This poem immediately begins with the differences in the paths of the two sisters. Maud may have been the achiever, the one chosen to excel and become a success. Maud was the sister who, if not the brightest, was certainly the least adventuresome, and the more dutiful, of the two. The connotation that Sadie stayed at home could be interpreted in a number of ways. Did Sadie live at home with her parents and do nothing as Maud went to college Did she merely stay in their hometown but lived independent of their parents’ home? There is no indication that Maud went away to college and attained any measure of independence just that she attended college and Sadie did not. Maud does not strike one as the type to leave home.…

In this short story we meet Sister and four members of her family. The Protaganist of the story ia Sister , the oldest child of two girls, and her younger sister Stella-Rondo is the family favorite. It seems everything Sister wants, Stella-Rondo gets. Sister says that Stella-Rondo stole her boyfriend for it was Sister who had been dating Mr. Whitaker first until Stella- Rondo, being the jealous person she was told him that Sister was "one-sided," unequal on both sides. And that in-turn ended the relationship.Sisters real problem is that she is extreamly jelous of Stella-rondo. And she, Sister, at times can be a little selfish. For instance at the end Sister says to herself, "And if Stella-Rondo should come to me this minute, on bended knee, and attempt to explain the incidents of her life with Mr. Whitaker, I'd simply put my fingers in both my ears and refuse to listen" (153). That statement alone defines her jealously and selfishness towards her sister, because it seems Mr. Whitaker is the only thing she is really upset about for she makes no mention about any of the other family members,…

Though I get the main purpose of this essay, I don’t really think it has created an effect on me. Part of it is because I cannot relate to the character, another is that I know the narrator too well that I know what is going to happen. Everyone knows what is going to happen. Her personality is so set in stone that the room for interpretation is limited. We all know she is super anxious, worrisome, and over-protective from the way she talks to the audience, the way she thought of another woman over the screen, the way she rolls the stroller on the street. In addition, everything is so crystal clear and evident that there is no much need to go back and flip through the story once again to understand the underlining purpose. The ambiguity element is missing in this essay, thus makes this work less appealing and less effective on…

When I introduced myself to patient A for the first time she seemed very distressed. She was lying in bed on her side. She had a notepad and pen in bed beside her. She was able to write down that she felt very uncomfortable in the bed. I quickly learnt that she was also able to give a ‘thumbs up’ gesture for a yes as an answer and a ‘flat hand’ as a no answer. This meant you could ask her questions with a simple answer. It was important to maintain eye contact however still being to acknowledge her hand gestures. Body language is also important, so in order to do both I bent down to gain the important eye contact. I asked her if it was her position she was in and she gave a flat hand gesture, which indicated no, then I asked if she’d like any pillows on her bed, as she had none, to which she replied in the same way. She then wrote down that it was the mattress as she couldn’t move around easily on it. I told her this was because it was a pressure relieving air mattress. I told…
