The majoring groups of Latinos living in the United States. Each of the following groups is described in this section: Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, Central Americans, and Columbians and Panamanians share a chapter. Within the chapter, Gonzalez writes about individuals or families in order to reflect the general migration story of the larger groups. Thus, these individual portrayals serve as representations of the larger collection of immigrants. In the third section Gonzalez discusses several topics relating to Hispanics living in the United States. The topics include politics, immigration, language and culture, free trade, and the state of Puerto Rico. His theory is that different societies exist as a result of the historical antecedents to our modern society. In the immigrant descriptions help to personalize each of the different groups and allow the reader to identify with their stories. Also, Gonzalez stresses the important differences between each of the various Latino immigrant groups in the United States. Gonzalez combines much historical research with personal interviews he has conducted of various immigrant families. Gonzalez raises several issues concerning Hispanics living in the United States that are timely. He also asserts changes and believes that are essential to ensure Latino prosperity and assimilation in the United States. The changes he suggests are thought provoking and stimulating. Although the book has much strength, it also has limitations. The most obvious limitation of the section is its brevity. Gonzalez attempts to summarize more than 500 years of history in less than eighty pages. As a result, much of the history described is generalized and collapsed into short, summary statements. This book is well suited for those wishing to learn more about Hispanics in the United States.…

The United States is a country built on immigration, both legal and illegal. One of the most influential groups in terms of immigration in America is the Latin American demographic. Latin Americans influence everything from their local economies, politics, culture and society in general. There are a number of arguments made both for and against continued immigration by Latinos, from the fact that all Americans are descended from immigrants to the fact that they provide needed labor in areas that many American citizens are less inclined to work in. The argument against immigration is that allowing Latin Americans in steals jobs from U.S. citizens, they contribute unduly to crime statistics or that they take advantage of social services reserved for legal Americans without paying the taxes that keep these programs in service. In this paper, I will present a brief history of Latin American immigration and present arguments both for and against continued movement into the United States. The close of the paper will be reserved for my opinion on what the best course of action would be to curtail the problems facing immigration in the United States.…

According to Gonzalez, some often describe the American model, in contrast to the ill-suited Spanish model, as one that was fundamentally suited for power and expansion. However, as Gonzalez argues in the chapter, his views are not particularly in accord with the general consensus because these views “ignore the discordant and unequal relationship that emerged between the US and Latin America from the first days of independence.” (Page 27).…

The year is 1776. In an act of defiance of the oppressive rule of the powerful nation of Great Britain, the political leaders of the British-American colonies sign into existence the United States of America. Even before this inception of the United States, North America had been seen as a place where one could move to start a new life and reap the full rewards for one’s work. These opportunities combined with the new United States government founded on the ideals of freedom and equity have attracted countless families from all over the world, making the United States truly a country of immigrants. Immigrants from European nations coming to America both assimilated and helped to shape the culture of the nation. Others, either immigrants or those forced to come to the United States, were marked with distinguishable differences from the European majority. The Africans and Asians are examples of some of these minorities, but, in my belief, one of the groups that has had the most unique struggle to become part of the ‘great melting pot’ of America is the Latino culture. For many different reasons Latin Americans have struggled to assimilate with the American culture for hundreds of years.…

It was reported that from 2000 to 2010, the Latino/a American population increased by 43 percent thus making Latino/a Americans 16 percent of the overall U.S. population. On the other hand, a decrease in growth of the non-Hispanic White population was reported with a growth rate of less than one percent in a decade (Ennts et al.,…

The era of political violence in Ecuador has been around ever since it was a territory controlled by the Spaniards. Ecuador, as many developing countries, has strongly marked boundaries among its socio-economical classes; therefore a small and corrupted elite has always controlled it. The political power has been always bouncing from the right to left wings. Governmental candidates usually won by promising the people social wellbeing and offering small gifts for gaining their alliance. Campaign promises are rarely kept.…
