Uber Technologies Incorporated, commonly known as Uber, is a privately held multi-national company providing transportation network. Transportation network company (TNC) serves to connect paying passengers and drivers using non-commercial vehicles through the use of apps or websites. In Uber’s instance, services are exclusively provided on the ‘Uber’ mobile application which is available on Android, iOS and Windows. The two got the ideas of creating a fast app to get a ride with just a tap after being stuck in the snow without a cab nearby. Uber’s headquarter is located in San Francisco, United States, and currently has spreaded to 528 cities worldwide (Uber, 2017). According to the company’s website, Uber cars hit Hanoi’s streets for the first time in October, 2014, just 3 months after its operation in Ho Chi Minh city. The current CEO of the Vietnam Uber branch is Dang Viet Dung, a MBA graduate of Harvard Business School (Vietnamnet, 2016).
In an introduction posted on their website, Uber sees itself as “is evolving the way the world moves. By seamlessly connecting riders to drivers through our apps, we make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers” (Uber, 2017). Uber is aiming to strengthen the relationship between the company and the drivers, and at the same time establish and prolong the relationship between the company and the passengers through its technological development. In short, Travis Kalanick explained to CNN in its “Fareed Zakaria GPS” show that Uber’s mission is to make “transportation as reliable as water” (CNN, …show more content…
According to Fortune, Uber has by then already partnered with Starwood, Capital One, Amex, Hilton and Paypal (Fortune, 2015). Along with this came several discount and benefits for Uber riders, whether it’s awarding hotel points for each ride or 20% discount for each ride fee for Quicksilver cardholder. In Vietnam, Uber is currently in agreement with Foody: each passenger who order Foody through its online app will get a free ride worth of 100,000VND (Uber, 2016)..
Next to that, Uber is also cooperating with Baskin n’ Robbin with the #UberIceCream hashtag. Right now, the deal in Hanoi is ordering Gelato Italia, 3 pieces for 50,000VND delivered by Uber drivers to the location where the customer requires, while in Ho Chi Minh City is offering Haagen Dazs for 150,000VND (Uber, 2016). In addition, Uber is looking to expand even more into the market by shaking hands with Bitis last year, Trang Tv, Orion Media, Toyota and many other organizations.
