Situational Irony In The Color Purple
In the book “the color purple” by Alice walker she uses ironic devices to show that celie was abused mentally and physically. While she had endure the abuse it becomes worse as time passed and she felt hopeless in trying to protect herself. As shown in the book the main protagonist tells her story in a diary. In the Color Purple many ironic devices are used to show the true meaning of the book.The ironic that the author used are situational irony and symbolism. The situational irony plays a big part in the book because it displayed many use of those devices noticed a lot of it used. For example when Mr.__ and Celie go visit shug they both fall in love with her even though she doesn't want nothing to do with them. Also in the book Shug teaches
Celie to love herself and shows her how to become a proud strong woman. Another part of situational irony that I found is that nettie went to africa to find her sisters kids who Celie has been looking for them since they were born. Another example of situational irony is where Shug was a singer and her father was a pastor she did this because she didn't know right from wrong at the time. The book also uses symbolism in the fact that Shug represents Celie becoming an independent woman and on how shug teaches celie to love herself. Also in the book Shug teaches Celie how to become a woman due to seeing celie being treated like a dog so Shug comes into Celie's life and show her how to be a strong independent woman. Even when Celie was young she was sexually abused by the man she thought was her “father” and he had two of her children and she grew up with a hatred for him because he took away both of her children when she was younger and had no idea what had happened to her
