Slide 1 Situation Monday at Sub-Acute Unit, Doctor’s Day Leader : Billy, RN Team members: Mary, LVN experienced Judy, LVN inexperienced, willing to learn Frank, LVN experienced John LVN new employee, experienced + 3 CNAs & 1 RNA
It was a busy Monday for Billy, the RN. Two doctors and a nurse practitioner came to visit and examined 21 patients. Both 2 doctors performed 3 bedside bronchoscopy procedures on this same day. The PNP wrote several orders which included transferring one of Judy’s patients to another hospital for higher level of care. Transport team would be coming in an hour. Based on the development levels, Judy was D2 due to her inexperience. She needed direction, support and supervision to build her confidence and involvement in decision making in order to increase her commitment to do the job. Billy intervened by defining her tasks and supervising her closely so she could learn and perform her job well. Mary, John and Frank were competent workers due to their years of experience but were less committed to their jobs. They were less enthusiastic to the demands of their unit. They could have helped in reinserting the pulled out IV, carrying our orders, answering the phones and vent alarms, instead Billy supported them by assuming the tasks. To increase their commitment to the job they need support and encouragement.
