Situational Poverty In Victorian England

Victorian England, especially London had a severe problem with poverty. Many people in London lived in poverty. Eliza is one of these many people that lived in poverty during the Victorian era in London. In the play Pygmalion and musical My Fair Lady, the main character, Eliza, is shown to be poor and living in poverty. Both the play and musical show how she lived in poverty and how her poorness hindered her from attaining a job. Since she cannot speak well she can’t get a job as a lady in a flower shop. Because she could not get a job she had to resort to selling flowers on the street. Seeking help to learn how to speak properly, she goes to Henry Higgins, a phonetics professor. He teaches Eliza how to speak properly and how to act like a lady over the course of six months. Generational poverty is when two generations have been born into poverty. Situational poverty is caused by a sudden job loss, an economic crisis, health problems, or an environmental disaster. Both forms of poverty can last for a few years or many. However, generational poverty is typically much worse than situational poverty since the family has been in poverty for at least two generations, making it harder for their children to overcome poverty. It is harder for their children to overcome generational poverty because the children were born into a family that have little to no resources available to them. These children tend to be less educated since they have to drop out of school and help support their families. Situational poverty can be long but, it is typically short because someone can find a job, relief from an environmental disaster, or they finish paying off all medical bills.
