Six Degrees of Separation
1. I believe that I need to work on supportive evidence for the next few essays
2. When we were given time to write our essay I did not pick a text which I had a clear understanding of and I had trouble finding evidence to support my ideas. I also feel like I had trouble expressing and giving strong supporting evidence to my idea. I will also attempt to create a better thesis so that my idea is strong and specific.
Individuals may take different paths to achieve a goal while using others for their own selfish needs, while trying to achieve the goal. Characters may get lost along the way and the influence the individual has on others will vary. In the play Six Degrees of Separation, Guare creates a character whose entire life is seen as a performance seen by the audience and creates difference influences on other characters as he creates a mask for himself and enters someone else’s in-order to perform in front of others to obtain his ambition of being in the spotlight. An individual’s motivation in pursuing their goals through methods of manipulation and fraud can be seen when Paul enters Flan and Louisa’s house. Paul had entered someone else’s life in-order to gain personal satisfaction; the feeling of being in the spotlight was something he always wanted. The impact Paul had on Louisa was giving meaningful connections, all the knowledge she obtained has no meaning. She has color, all the world experience, and has material possessions but she realises that there’s no structure in this. All of this knowledge has no impact on her; it just serves as an experience unlike a certain color to a painting which is worth something. Although Louisa did not show a change in her feelings towards her family, she showed a shift in her character when she had a fight with Flan which brought out her individual feelings with her experiences with Paul instead of using the story as an anecdote like Flan.     They play Six Degrees of Separation was about how a young man by the name of Paul Poitier conned his way into the lives of multiple families in New York City. These families for the most part, where part of the upper-wealthy class of society. The beginning of the play starts with Paul Poitier barging in unexpectedly at the Kittredge’s home claiming he was mugged and whoever did it stole his thesis. He also has a stab wound in his lower abdominal. He told the Kittredge’s that he knew their children and that he even attended Harvard with them. He was polite and charming and came off as being well educated. He soon revealed to them that he was the son of the notorious movie start Sydney Poitier. Everything he spoke about had the Kittredge’s so engaged in conversation. He cooked them dinner that night which they enjoyed and convinced him to spend the night since he had nowhere to go. Flan even gave him $50 as some pocket change for when he left. The next morning to her surprise Oeisea found Paul having sex with a male in her daughter’s bed that she let him spend the night in. The Kittredge’s were furious and embarrassed and kicked Paul and his lover out of the house. Later they tried to go to the police to press charges, but the police said that there was nothing that they could do since nothing was stolen and they willing let Paul into their home. Later in the play the Kittredge’s find out that their children have no idea who this man was and said that he was a complete stranger. The Kittredge’s were shocked because he knew everything about their lives in such detail. He tricked them, but they weren’t his only victims. It was later discovered that a similar interaction happened with another couple close to the Kittredge’s. And also to a couple that Paul met in the park and lied to and told them he was infact Flans first son who he now denies. Paul ended up sleeping with the male and soon later after that the guy committed suicide. Paul impacted these families lives…
