In Barbara Ehrenreich's New York Times article, “Too Poor to make the News”, she investigates a phenomenon that has been swept away by the waves of media headlines about “middle class cutbacks” and “the super-rich giving up private jets”. (pg 322) She talks to people she met while writing her book “Nickel and Dimed” and uncovers stories of people whose ends could not be met before the recession, and are even less likely to be met now with increasing layoffs, foreclosed homes, and unavailable loans. She describes the problem well, and provides several sad tales, including one about her own nephew and his family's problems. She raises a crucial issue. Accepting the ways in which poverty is…
When I watch TV over my dinner at night, I see a world in which almost everyone makes $15 an hour or more, and I'm not just thinking of the anchor folks. The sitcoms and dramas are about fashion designers or schoolteachers or lawyers, so it's easy for a fast-food worker or nurse's aide to conclude that she is an anomaly — the only one, or almost the only one, who hasn't been invited to the party. And in a sense she would be right: the poor have disappeared from the culture at large, from its political rhetoric and intellectual endeavors as well as from its daily entertainment. Even religion seems to have little to say about the plight of the poor, if that tent revival was a fair sample. The moneylenders have finally gotten Jesus out of the…
Twenty One Pilots is an alternative/indie band made up of two members, Joseph and Josh Dunn. They are known to occasionally rap and include specific tempos and beats that correspond with each song’s thought provoking lyrics. In the song “Oh. Ms. Believer” by Twenty One Pilots they use the analogy of snow to describe a young girl going through depression. The band accurately describes the feeling of being trapped inside one's mind as they go through the hardships of this mental illness. Although at first this song may be interpreted as another cliché alternative hit, the meanings hidden beneath the lyrics are sure to tug at the listener's heart strings as he/she looks through the eyes of someone who struggles with a loved one who is depressed.…
Saunders statement on the impact of Wilco song reflects his own values from his fiction by allowing him to relate his fictional stories to what people go through everyday. For Saunders, the song brings out the better in him, he feel like every type of situation has a solution. Even in the most conflicted scenario people are able or have the option to put aside their differences and workout their differences. Saunders writing style also includes writing things indirectly by giving out clues of what might be going on in a characters mind or even a scenario in the story, but he doesn’t tell his readers the problem directly. He allows his readers to process the information, take guesses and allows them to figure out things on their own as the…
In the piece “At the edge of Poverty” David Shipler tells about the world of “the forgotten Americans”. The people who can’t save, can’t get a better job, and cannot move on to a better life. He shows us how hard it is to be someone like that, to be on the edge of poverty. He brings us to a different level of understanding of what these people go though and how they are almost are stuck in society, only to dream for a better future. In this well written piece, Shipler does a wonderful job of grabbing and keeping the attention of the reader with many techniques. He uses metaphors, pathos, dramatically short sentences, imagery and many more techniques. Shipler does, though, have two of his best techniques that he uses to really make this piece…
The effects of poverty are something that not everyone can sense, mostly because they themselves are not impoverished. In 2pac’s song “Brenda’s Got A Baby” (Shakur, Tupac Amaru. "Brenda's Got A Baby." YouTube. YouTube, 05 July 2011. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.) We can truly see an inside look on poverty. If we dig inside on the lyrics we get…
Though John Scalzi never reveals his own experience with poverty like Jeanette, his biography tells us that he was spent his childhood in California in poverty and was able to work out of it similar to Jeannette Walls. John takes on a “no tolerance” attitude when it comes to stereotypes about the poor, especially victims of hurricane Katrina that hit in 2005. The reason he wrote “Being Poor” was because of the people asking why everyone did not just leave when they were told to and avoid the hurricane. He answered in his essay indirectly that these poor southern people do not have reliable transportation, live hand-to-mouth, and have nowhere else to go even if they had the means to get there. Hurricane Katrina was the costliest hurricane in the history of the United States, and the sixth strongest overall. The severe destruction left many losses of life and property damage, but for the poor it was the worst. John Scalzi wrote this essay for the ignorant people wondering why the poor in New Orleans did not just leave when the hurricane came. The details he gives describe on an everyday basis what these families are going through. “Being poor is clutching that box of Raisin Bran and trying to think of a way to make the kids understand that the box has to last” gives many details in one line. Raisin Bran is a simple type of cereal and one that can be off-brand. Trying to make the kids understand it has to last is showing that many times that box might be all a whole family has for a month. This was the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States, and people are asking the poor why they did not leave. Many think that it is easy to move out of poverty, but they have never experienced true poverty before. Many families are single-parent households who wake up and work all day,…
I thought that the video was relatively on point with the difficulties of living off of minimum wage. It demonstrated the difficulties in resisting temptation to buy, the emotional effects of having little or no money, how sometimes no matter how long or hard you work the pay just isn’t enough, etc. I liked that they showed the costs of hospital bills in comparison to the amount of money being brought in from working minimum wage.…
The poverty rate in Memphis is an issue which emanates passion on the inside of my soul. It is evident how poverty influences Memphis in a plethora of ways. Poverty creates a ripple effect which trickles over into the crime rate, education levels and the overall quality of life in the city. There is a sect in the city where poverty has become the norm. Generation after generation the expectation is to remain in the same predicament as their predecessors.…
In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Pit and the Pendulum,” poe uses the elements of suspense, madness, and plot twist. But the whole story is based on Poe's life, (the guy they talk about) like how he was captured, and taken away and almost killed luckily he escapes. The story was clearly thought out. The author states that his life with his parents was rough ¨His dad rejected him¨ ¨his mother died at a very young age¨, However, when he got kidnapped by the Spanish inquisitions he was put in a dungeon, Then finally the last thing was when he was freaking out when they were trying to kill him with the pit the rats and the pendulum.…

When reading this realistic article "What Is Poverty?" by Jo Goodwin Parker, who shares her disturbing experiences living in poverty throughout her entire life. This story will open people's eyes to realize to be grateful for the little things we have in life. As the author defines poverty, one can feel her intentions are to put a sense of guilt towards the less fortunate. In the beginning, Goodwin advises the reader to, "Listen without pity" by the end, the persuasive tone alters a greater influential impact (Goodwin 86). It is clear these forces of indifference are powerful emotions that can question one to reconsider what they would do in a case of being a prisoner to poverty.…
Poverty is one of the most serious issues in the United States today. Those that are affected were once the minority of society is now emerging as the majority. The new faces of poverty would surprise many people. It is no longer the face of the pleading face of a middle-aged man on a city street holding up a sign that says “Hungry, Need Help.”, or the face of a young child in a classroom, whose only real meal today will be a free school lunch. It is also the sad face of a single mother who doesn’t have enough money to buy clothes for her children.…
