In the article “Can Skinny Beat Obesity?” by Philip Rea, Peter Yin, and Ryan Zahalka explains the differences between white and brown fat within our bodies cells. With brown fat being classified as the better of the two, which burns calories to produce heat. White fat acts as a storage container, which is why it is a major contributor of weight gain. The article further discusses how fat is necessary within our bodies, as it helps keep our body at a stable temperature and providing energy. Monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats are known as good fats, the both of benefits in the way that they both reduce LDL cholesterol levels. They reduce the risk of heart disease and numerous health problems. They are still part of the fat family but with benefits in our nutrition. We do need to keep in mind though that they are still fats and should never over consume them. Of these two fats monounsaturated fat has an added contribute of healthy doses of vitamin E. These two fats are generally found in plants. Lipids are a component found in blood fats commonly spoke of as cholesterol. They are needed for healthy cell growth however in excess can put us at risk for more problems. There are four types of fats. Although there are bad fats and better fats, they are necessary to support cell growth and give your body energy. The bad fats are saturated fats and trans fats which are more solid at room temperature like a stick of butter and trans fats are liquid such as vegetable oil. Theses fats raise bad cholesterol levels and clog arteries putting you at risk for heart disease. In an experiment carried out by West et al, a group of rats exposed to the same experimental conditions were fed a high fat and a low fat diet with and without CLA supplements for six weeks. The high fat control mice weighed 5.7g less than the control mice, on the other hand, the low fat control mice weighed 3.2g more than the Mice supplemented with CLA (West et al, 1998). This change in weight and overall body composition is brought about by apoptosis of the adipocyte tissues (Wang and Jones, 2004). Human pre-adipocytes taken from the human tissues were cultured and exposed to 100uM conjugated Linoleic acid for 24-94 h (Evans et al, 2000). This induced the release of the tumor necrosis factor as measured using DNA analysis (TNF- alpha), causing apoptotic tissue death in human cells. TNF-alpha functions in preventing the development of preadipocytes to mature adipocytes and causes the delipidation of newly formed adipocyte tissue in humans (Sorisky et al 2004). In the experiment carried out above, after the exposure, the cultured cells had less triglycerides content and inhibits lipoprotein lipase activity as compared to the control (Evans et al, 2000: Park et al, 1999). CLA reduces buildup of triglycerides in adipocytes tissue while the inhibition of fatty acids intake (energy intake) prevents the fatty acid incorporation to form triglycerides stored in the adipocyte (Beleury…

There are two categories of body fat- storage fat and essential fat. Essential fat is very necessary for healthy functioning. It is stored in tiny amounts in your bone marrow, body organs- lungs, heart, liver, kidney, spleen- muscles and central nervous system. The healthy essential fat range for women is 10-15% and for men 2-5%. Women’s essential fat is higher, because biologically it needs to be. They are thicker in the pelvis, hips, thighs and breasts. This is essential for the child-bearing process. Storage fat is what many say is the “expendable” fat. This is the fat that increases when you gain weight and it is the weight you try to lose when you want to lose weight. This type of fat builds up under your skin in different areas of the body and in your muscles. It is also the type that protects your internal organs from any injury. Storage fat for women and men is just about on the same scale. Too much or too little storage fat is unhealthy.…
