Sky's Pain And Trauma In The Air Force
“You have to let me go, remember you will see me again” Jason said kissing her softly with his last breathe. Is it fate, karma or bad luck, but every time something good happens in Sky’s life it all comes tumbling down. This time it really hurt her, Jason had been the one person that really understood all the pain and trauma she experienced in the Air Force.
The first time they met was at Vancouver General hospital, after he found Sky wallowing in grief. Her world was crumbling down, she wouldn’t be able to walk or fly. That was her dream, ever since she flew her first Cessna 172 Skyhawk at 18. She fell in love with being in the air. On May 21, 1932 a small, tattered plane touched ground on a pasture near Londonderry, Ireland. An Irish farmer left tending his cows to find where the rumbling noise was coming from, and in his backyard he found an airplane and a young woman by the name of Amelia Earhart. The man drove her five miles away to the nearest telephone, and over a quick phone call to New York, she proclaimed, “I did it!” After 15 hours and 2,026 miles, Amelia Earhart had set a new record (Bailey, 201). Amelia Earhart’s flight as the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean was a defining event in American history because it was a feat in the field of aviation, created greater opportunity for women, and made her into an inspirational celebrity for the…

When 10-year-old Amelia Mary Earhart saw her first plane at a state fair, she was not impressed. "It was a thing of rusty wire and wood and looked not at all interesting," she said. It wasn't until Earhart attended a stunt-flying exhibition, almost a decade later, that she became seriously interested in aviation. A pilot spotted Earhart and her friend, who were watching from an isolated clearing, and dove at them. "I am sure he said to himself, 'Watch me make them scamper,'" she said. Earhart, who felt a mixture of fear and pleasure, stood her ground. As the plane swooped by, something inside her awakened. "I did not understand it at the time," she said, "but I believe that little red airplane said something to me as it swished by." On December 28, 1920, pilot Frank Hawks gave her a ride that would forever change her life. "By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground," she said, "I knew I had to fly."…

Since being in the military, I have personally dealt with three suicides within the Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) community. One of these three deaths was a close friend of mine. On January 4th, 2014, two days after my birthday, my friend Daniel Lars Shoemaker took his life. This tragic event was shocking because no one knew he was dealing with his demons. However, hindsight is 20/20, and this has left me with a sense of guilt because I feel I could have done something to prevent his actions. I wish I would have been a better Wingman to Daniel.…
