Background of the Study
In late the 90’s demands for fast meat production was highly recommended due to the growing population in the Philippines. Public demands on meat products and processing industry need a fast approach. Public slaughterhouses were made to be able to accommodate the number of meat products and the escalating volume of livestock in a community. The slaughterhouse emerged as a unique institution as a part of larger transition from an agrarian to industrial system in the Philippines. Prior to the point animals were slaughtered for consumptions on diverse places in the country. Hence, cleanliness of the public slaughterhouse must be monitored for the safety of the meat products before the public consumption. (Hudsen, 2008) Regular inspection and proper waste disposal must be practiced to ensure the efficiency and safety of slaughterers inside the slaughterhouse. (Marckwardt, 1983)
The Guimbal Public Slaughterhouse was one among the 44 public slaughterhouses in the province of Iloilo, located at the Barakang, Guimbal, Iloilo. The construction of the Guimbal Public Slaughterhouse started on the year 2000 and started to operate in the month of July 2003. Since the operation of the public slaughterhouse started, the Municipality of Guimbal has increased its meat processing industry. In addition, the employment rate of the community increased because most of the residents are able to have a permanent job and increase the income of their own family. However, the area from which the slaughterhouse was built is surrounded by residential areas and the drainage used for the wastewater from the public slaughterhouse is used by most of the residents in the area.
In connection to this issue, the researchers formulated this study to determine the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon living on the area and its workers by the length of stay in the area.
Statement of the Problem This study aimed to determine the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1.) What is the extent of the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanons when taken as a whole and grouped according to the length of stay (a. 1-20 years, b. 21-40 years and c. 41-40 years)?
2.) Are there any significant differences in the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanons when grouped according to the length of stay (a. 1-20 years, b. 21-40 years and c. 41-40 years)?
Therefore, it was hypothesized that there was no any significant differences in the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanons when grouped according to the length of stay.

Independent Variable and Dependent Variable of the study Scope and Delimitation of the Study This study entitled “Perceived Advantages and Disadvantages of the Operation of the Slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon”. This study aimed to find out the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon when taken as a whole and group according to the length of years they are staying in the area. This study also aimed to find out if there were any significant differences in the perceive advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the slaughterhouse when grouped according to the length of years they were staying in the area. This study in Barakang near the Public slaughterhouse in Barangay Bagumbayan Guimbal, Iloilo and lasted before the end of the school year 2012 to March 2013. This study was limited only in thirty- (30) workers of the public slaughterhouse and thirty (30) selected residents with sixty- (60) respondents out of five hundred ninety-three (593) populations in Barangay Bagumbayan Guimbal, Iloilo. The respondents were selected using to quota sampling. According to Aldrich (1995), quota sampling is a non-probability sampling technique wherein the assembled sample has the same proportions of individuals as the entire population with respect to known characteristics, traits or focused phenomenon. The researcher selected the respondents according to some fixed quota. That is, units were selected into a sample based on pre-specified characteristics so that the total sample has the same distribution of characteristics assumed to exist in the population being studied. The researchers divide the respondents according to the length of years they were staying in the area (a. 1-20, b. 21-40, c. 41-60 years). Each year bracket was composed of twenty (20) respondents with sixty (60) respondents in the sutdy with the use of quota sampling.
Significance of the Study The researchers conducted the study in order to determine the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of public slaughterhouse to the Guimbal. The researchers gained more knowledge by conducting the study. The results were beneficial to the workers for the workers would have the knowledge and idea on the proper waste disposal inside the public slaughterhouse. The workers would also understand the different practices that may cause various diseases and the workers would practice proper hygiene in the slaughterhouse. The study was also beneficial to the residents in the area for they would be aware about the different effects of the slaughterhouse to their self and their family. The residents would also have the knowledge to know the different perception regarding the public slaughterhouse and practice the proper hygiene for their own health safety. The Municipality of Guimbal was one of the beneficiaries of this study. The municipality would be aware of the practices in the slaughterhouse that causes the disadvantages and would be able to find a solution to avoid the malpractice inside the slaughterhouse. This study enables the researchers to widen their knowledge to the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon on the workers of the slaughterhouse and residents on the area through the survey form the respondents answer. The study enabled to find immediate solutions and minimize the hazardous effect of the operation of the public slaughterhouse to the Guimbalanon on the vicinity of the area. Definition of Terms For better understanding of the study, certain key terms and variables are given their definitions: Perceive is to become aware or to know, or identify by means of the senses. (Grolier New Webster Dictionary, 2003) In this study, perceive is used to determine the results in the study. Advantage is a condition or position conferring superiority, or a condition or set of circumstance, which helps one to reach a desire end. (Grolier New Webster Dictionary, 2003) In this study, advantage would be one of the dependent variable. Disadvantage is unfavourable circumstances that make an unusually difficult. Also, constituting, disadvantage, loss or damage. (Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, 2006) In this study, disadvantage would be one of the dependent variable. Slaughterhouse is an establishment where animals are butchered or slaughtered. (Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, 2006) In this study, slaughterhouse is an establishment in Barakang where the study was conducted. Operation is doing or performing of practical work. It is also a method or manner of functioning. (Merriam Websters Dictionary, 2006) In this study, the word operation describes the transaction or activity done by the worker in the public slaughterhouse.
