Censorship

Censorship is an act of changing or suppressing speech or writing that is considered subversive of the common good. In the First Amendment is says we have freedom of speech. But in 1983, this amendment was thought to be violated by the principle of Hazelwood East High School for deleting 2 articles from the school newspaper. I think we should have freedom of speech to express are views.

In an Article by Jerry Carroll “High school papers grow up” he states, how the principle of Missouri High School refused a student to publish an article about Teenage pregnancy and the effect of divorce on students. After this there was a State education code that was pasted for only the principal to be able to censor what the want. Another case came up at Homestead High School in Cupertino a seventeen year old girl Kathryn Pallokoff, writing about another seventeen year old girl that came out HIV positive, which can lead to aids. We should not be limited to are freedom of speech by some education code, because its eliminating are First Amendment right of Freedom off speech.

In another article by Jean Seigmann and Tessa Namuth “A Limit On The Student Press”, the talk about how in local television can talk about abortion, teen suicide, AIDS and runaway kids, but once the topics begin making headlines in school newspapers, high school principles often feel compelled to ban them. More than five hundred cases have opened up about censorship battles from student editors around the county. This to me is a dumb reason of a case because, we should have the liberty to write what we please about those types of topics, and we are in a mature age to be able to talk about topics of that sort in school.

So I think censoring should not happen because we should have the liberty to post what we please on school newspapers. Taking away are liberty is just breaking the first amendment. Yes, maybe it can disturb some people, but they don’t have to read it if they please not to.

I, _______, agree that school officials should be able to remove student publications when they believe material is unsuitable for younger students, or for reasons it could possibly disrupt the educational curriculum. If students are allowed "freedom of speech" other students could be slandered indirectly such as what occured in this case or fights may ensue due to disagreements. Yes, we as Americans have rights to speak our minds freely, but most students are minors and are under the supervision of the school. The school has the right to control what is allowed within its walls and must moniter students' doings in order to ensure the safety and eduaction of all students.…

The majority opinion claimed that the principal did the right thing in removing the pages before printing. It argued that it did not violate student’s rights, but on the other hand it protected the parents in the divorce article and the identities in the pregnancy article. By protecting the rights of others, he was also protecting the rights of those individual students mentioned in the articles and the school’s image. The minority opinion claims that the articles removed still represented individual student views. Those who argued the dissenting opinion justified it by expressing concern over what permitting censorship will do in the long run. For instance, if censorship was permitted in this case, it would set a precedent for general student censorship with…

case the principal refused approval to print. His reasoning was for the pregnancy article it mentioned birth control and sexual activity along with information from an anonymous source, but he felt readers would be able to figure out the person's identity. I favored a loose interpretation in this case. Although students have rights, there is a need for certain rights to be restricted to avoid any disruptions and chaos within the student body. This is one case where I believe the school was using these restrictions properly to protect the rights and best interest of others. Even though the school newspaper is a form of public expression, the newspaper was school sponsored therefore it had every right to alter the paper.…

The first Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of expression from government interference. This is one of the most important amendments in the constitution and is what America is most proud of. However, these rights aren’t all they are cracked up to be. For example, censorship is very common and goes against the freedom of speech. Censorship has many different roles in society both in the past and present. In the past it was used as a way for dictators to control their people and keep them from reading rebellious literature. Hitler even burned all books that he did not like.…

According Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt in their article “The Coddling of the American Mind”, a disturbing pattern is arising in which certain ideas, words, and actions are being censored based solely on claims of their “being offensive” or “triggering”. The authors argue that the culture of censorship originates from a good intentioned protectiveness imposed by baby boomers who had developed a more watchful way of raising children. However, this protectiveness has since devolved to be “vindictive” in nature. Students have started to abuse the power they hold in the academic world to bully both teachers and administration, creating a culture of fear of bringing up certain controversial, yet important issues. This has in turned allowed college aged students to believe that if there is a topic which they “cannot handle”, they can either remove…

There are some times where it is needed little, and also times where it is not needed at all. And even the times it is needed, it is not needed to the extent that it is used. There are very many ways censorship is bad for this country, and very few ways it is actually needed. Censorship in the knowledge of other countries, censorship from the government, censorship in technology, and censorship in learning are just few ways censorship is misused in the U.S. Everyone knows, as well as the pro-censorship believers, that censorship is misused in some areas. And that other areas it is not needed at all. Anyone that is pro-censorship knows well enough that it is wrong, the way it is misused. To close my argument i would like to point out the fact that pro-censorship believers have no real reason behind why it is a good thing, and cannot prove wrong that it is bad for not only children, but everyone in america. Now, i would like to resm my case by again saying to simply look into the negatives and positives of censorship, and see which one outweighs the…

The first amendment states that we as Americans have “freedom of speech, or of the press” (Source 1). Therefore, we have the right to express what we want to say, even if others do not want to hear it. On the other hand, books are banned for a reason; various books are offensive towards race, religion, and gender (Source 3). Indeed this is true, but considering books are one of the best ways to get information, it is wrong to ban a book from an entire state just because a couple parents did not want their children to read the book. In general, banning educational resources for students is…
