Since slave owners could not speak the tribal language of the Africans they made sure slaves was from th same area was not placed together on the plantations. By breaking all communication of the slaves from the same area also meant that families were separated. Slaves were sold by auction to the person that bid the most money for them. When a slave ship was due to arrive, slave auctions were advertised. After arriving, the slaves were taken off the ship, washed and covered with grease, in order to look healthier. Also, using a hot iron they were branded as slaves. The trades were using these tricks in order to gain as much money as possible. Before the bidding, the buyers were able to look at the slaves closely. Each slave was given a starting price, and potential buyers would bid against each other by giving higher prices. The buyer bidding the highest price would become the owner of that slave. There were many cases where the bidder may not want to buy the whole family, but only the strongest and…

Slavery began when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid such lucrative crops as tobacco. As hard as it may be to believe but slavery was completely legal. You may wonder why slave-owners couldn't do work themselves. The reason is the cotton industry was HUGE back then. The invention of the cotton gin also led southern states to depend so highly on slavery. The cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton from their seeds so much quicker (which was actually very time consuming) than by hand. The inventor was Eli Whitney in 1793 and patented it in 1794. A revolutionized cotton gin is still used today.…

After reviewing the three slave ads, the first one stuck out the most because of its subtlety and descriptive profiling. In the first slave ad it describes a runaway African-American slave that goes by the name of Will and the reward for his capture is 10 dollars. The time stamp of the article is 1774, a few years before the north American colonies declared independence from England. This ad was unique to the other ads in being more descriptive of the said slave than the second ad, as well as being less aggressive than the third ad. Analyzing the ad along with other information, the history around the time frame could suggest why the ad was written in a less aggressive manner on the slave’s capture, there was an increase in value…

In other words, this all began because slaves were sick and tired of the cruel abuse they had to experience. They were all unjust and unnecessary in my personal opinion. Stated in “Kentucky Slave Laws” the author provided examples that showed and elaborated on the restrictions of slaves. For example, in the mid 1700’s there was a law created that any of the slaves found outside their restricted areas without a written pass would receive lashes or whips as a punishment which shows us, vividly, the cruelty they went through.…

With the main goal to find gold, the Europeans decided that they wanted to stay in this “New World”. After the atrocity that left thousands dead, the survivors were faced with the fight for the right of their land. With colonization came slavery, because without it European colonization would have stayed limited in North America. Slaves were defined by the Europeans as non-Christian and non-European people. In 1705, the Virginia General Assembly stated, "All servants imported and brought into the Country ... who were not Christians in their native Country ... shall be accounted and be slaves. All Negro, mulatto and Indian slaves within this dominion ... shall be held to be real estate. If any slave resists his master ... correcting such slave,…

A majority of the slaves wanted to have a taste of freedom and be able to live and work wherever they wanted and also be paid. There was a lot of barbarism that followed slavery, slave owners were required to beat their slaves so that they were petrified and would learn to not rebel against their owners. But at the same time, there were many people in the United States who were not for slavery and this ended up splitting our country into two at one point in time. Slavery began a mass movement of a group of people named abolitionist who would stand up against slave owners and try to show the country how unethical slavery was. These abolitionists would help assist the slaves to freedom but this would enrage slave owners.…
