The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal and hold certain unalienable rights, which are, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Slavery clearly denies these basic rights, allowing for the inhumane treatment of people because of the color of their skin. The legacies of slave rebellion leaders such as Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser, and Denmark Vassey have and continue to be heroes for thousands of slaves worldwide.

Tacky's Rebellion
Together with a small group of Ashanti followers, he broke into the armory at Port Maria, killed the guard, and stole muskets, powder, and ammunition. As the rebels moved inland, attacking farms and plantations, they were joined by hundreds of other slaves. (Altman, Susan)
A number of the slaves gave up and returned to their plantations. Tacky and about 25 followers continued to fight. A maroon sharpshooter named Davy managed to kill Tacky, and the other rebels committed suicide rather than surrender. (Altman, Susan) An additional 600 slaves were deported to Honduras. The fact that Maroons helped suppress the rebellion soured relations between them and the slave population for years to come. (Altman, Susan)
Creole Mutiny
Washington was caught and placed aboard the Creole to be sold in Louisiana with 135 other slaves.
