When Victor Frankenstein creates the Creature he is attempting to play god. He then eventually has to suffer the consequences of playing, which leads to his death. Through Frankenstein Mary Shelley is trying to demonstrate what happens when people attempt to play god. She showing us someone who is playing God, the consequences of playing God and through this she is giving us a warning to not do this or bad things will happen.
Throughout history many people have attempted to play God, but it was never able to be done successfully. This is seen during slavery when slave traders and slave master tried to control people for their own benefit and wellbeing. The slave traders kept the slaves in inhumane conditions on ships below decks, where overcrowding and extremely unsanitary conditions where a common theme on these ships. The slaves were never allowed on the deck of a ship and the only time they were able to get up there they got beaten by the slave traders. Also the slave masters did not treat the slaves like human beings, but more like labor robots who worked an obscene amount. Slaves spent almost all of their days working for endless hours, while getting beaten for anything they did wrong. They never made any money and the chances of them being freed by their masters were very slim to none. Slavery eventually came to an end, due to realization of how these people were being treated. Life support is another common example of people trying to play God. Life support means that a machine is taking over for a nonfunctional body, which cannot survive normally. It allows for the human body to still function when it normally cannot and it can sometimes lead to saving someone’s life. However, life support cannot keep someone alive for ever and a lot of the time it is just prolonging someone’s suffering. This is defying God because when God says it is time to go and die life support extends someone’s life.
