Racism is a huge problem in the workplace. “As late as 1989 police department had never hired a black employee for any position. Applications from blacks were routinely thrown in the garbage (“Herbert”). People have been treating African Americans poorly because of their skin color.
Since the 1980’s hardly any African Americans were employed because, children were starving and making a living off of small things that they could find around the streets because the parents didn’t have money to get food for their children and they most likely didn’t have shelter because they didn’t have any money for electricity. “At one point, according to Mr. Lundwall tapes, Mr. Ulrich mentions workplace diversity and use the term “‘black jelly beans’” (Herbert). If other races other than Caucasian are in a work field with them, they are at a high risk of using negative productivity such as harrassments or turnovers. In a workplace people are going to start losing good employees only because they are being harassed by other employees. Once they start to lose good employees, you start to lose good customers as well because people would only offer that one employee just because they were comfortable with them but now they’re gone, the good customers are gone as well to another company. “Watch as well for a high rate of turnover in one department, especially if you start to lose good people” (Everyman Business). Employees are using their best advantage to bully other employees just because of the past. It’s not just caucasian people, all races discriminate other races only because they are not their own race.
The more African Americans get jobs, the more they would take advantage of that opportunity. It’s hard enough that blacks cannot get jobs because of how they make themselves look but now that if they get that opportunity they take it and stand there like they don’t know exactly what to do. It varied that the younger black children would work hours/shifts more than an average adult. Children are trying to have pocket money but also more to take care of themselves and or their own parents/family members. The younger children may be bringing in more money than they expect. Also most people would spend time working and getting money than spending time at home being with their family. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2013a), employed Americans (aged 25-54 with children) spend almost 9 hours a day working, and spend more time working than in any other activities” (Plaut). People in the workplace would harass them with little things such as photos, touches, and or behavior towards them. They were not allowed to leave their emails and or personally things open on their laptop because people that have discrimination towards them will post negative things on social media and get hired and they may never get another job just because you can’t change what the internet says about them.
