Slavery Depicted In Shyima's Book, Hidden Girl
Imagine being sold into slavery at the age of eight, losing track of time, getting smuggled into the United States at the age of ten, getting freed by the age of thirteen, learning English at the age of thirteen, and having to live with the internal and external scars of slavery. This was the life of Shyima Hall. Her book Hidden Girl was the story of her bondage, escape, and life after the terror. I couldn’t imagine any of this, but this was and still is a common event in Egypt. Slavery is a terrible concept that goes on daily and still is not gone. People are getting illegally smuggled into the United States and only two percent of people get rescued. Hall was denied proper nutrition, medical care, education, and her childhood. Hall wrote,”...but then it dawned on me that my captors knew that in the United States my position in the household was not acceptable,” (49). I think that she noticed everything, when guests came she was to go in the cupboard and she had to stay hidden. Having any form of slavery in a household is illegal and she knew that. I hate the idea of slavery and holding a teen girl in a home is absurd. Her captors were aware and also the people on the street that saw and questioned her strange behavior. I feel that she knew it was wrong, knew everything was wrong in the world but she had no one to turn to.
Before reading this book, ending slavery seemed like an extremely difficult task. Hall wrote,”It takes only a single phone call to put steps into action that could rescue someone like me,” (216). After reading this quote, I realized that a small action can change a person's life and it takes the world one step closer to abolishing slavery. I believe that one action can change someone’s life and this one phone call could save a person from the terror that they lived in while enslaved. Hall was part of the 2% that was rescued.     Black women played several roles in slavery and in freedom. According to Darrel Dexter, the roles of Lydia Titus, was much of a struggle being a free slave. He informs us that, “Lydia Titus not only had to work on the farm to provide for her family, but maintaining their freedom against kidnapping became a lifelong struggle.” (371) The roles of a slave were much more brutal than that of a freed slave. As young as 9 years old, these undeveloped children were responsible for cooking. As the teenage years came, they were then held responsible for raking stubble, pulling weeds, hoeing, and picking cotton. (94) There are numerous stages of growth and work for the children and adults of slaves. However, gender was not recognized when it came to the younger slaves.     While reading this novel, I often thought about what I learned about slavery in school and the many films I've seen on the subject, most notably, the television series Roots , which is probably most of our first visual representation of a slaves' life – but I thought, "Noooo, they got it wrong! Slavery was 50 times worst than any representation I've ever seen on a film." 

Solomon Northup, was a free born, African America man living in New York state in the early 1800s. He had a wife, three children, and was able to provide for his family working various jobs, depending on the season. Solomon is kidnapped and forced into slavery for 12 years, in the deep south. 

What makes this novel so compelling is his story telling. He goes into great detail explaining what is feels like to be a slave; the constant state of fear (scared of waking up late, scared of not working fast enough, scared of being in the wrong place at the wrong time if your master is in an angry mood), the whippings (which happened more often than I originally thought), the brutal labor, the little food (yet being forced to work at 100% at all times with little nourishment), and the depressing feeling of being separated from your family (being sold to another master was the worst nightmare of most slaves, more fearful than the whip). His prose paints a clear picture of what it feels like to be a slave. 

I highly recommend this non-fiction novel (did I mention, this is a TRUE story) to any and everyone interested in American or African American history. 

This novel is currently being made into a film by director Steve McQueen, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender. I have to admit, I am very eager to see this film (it's slated for release Sept. 6, 2013) because I'm curious to see if they will be true to the original work, and go hard and showcase slavery in its most brutal form, even if it will make audiences uncomfortable, because as time goes on, I think we…
