Many of them were forbidden to learn how to write and read, have no privacy and couldn’t own no such thing. You can say that slaves in the southern didn’t have the right to do anything on their own. Later throughout the years, slavery became less dreadful.
Slaves gained rights and became more adapted with the world of economics and law. As to former slaves, they searched for the right to be free, have equal rights, and have a life of their own other than be someone’s’ “property”. Although former slaves’ good behavior was granted with liberation and some equal rights, the equal rights would be ignored at point of time by several other people that were against the liberation and equal rights for slaves. Although former slaves gained the liberty, there was other slaves called, fugitive slaves also known as the runaway slaves. These salves were the ones who would leave their masters and travel to places, mostly where slavery was banned, without written consent from the slaves. Fugitive slaves stand alone in this one, they get no help from no master nor anyone by disobeying the regulations. They get hunted down, shoot at, killed, and when caught they get arrested. Some slaves when returned to their masters, they get horrible acts such as getting whipped and branding. Although former and fugitive slaves have their differences, later former slaves helped fugitive salves escape the southern to a safe place by using a route called the underground
railroad. The masters of the southern slaves’ majority were whites. Each master owned around less than 50 slaves for their own and a law was made in the southern states where slaves were properties of their owners(masters). Some used for farming, servants, and other labor work. Most masters would reward the obedient slaves with favors and the rebellious slaves were punished. Masters made slaves believed that slaves were to depend on master to be sought for anything in the need for. As for when a master died, salves were sold to other owners. Slavery was a big thing in the south, slaves were to be former or fugitive. Either former or fugitive, both kind received freedom throughout the making of the laws in the states. Everyone shall stay equal.
